I usually listen to this channel when I get up in the morning to put on my makeup. The host speaks very clearly and explains the meaning and usage of each word.

The latest episode is about the Mauna Loa volcano eruption in Hawaii. Mauna Loa means "long mountain" in English.

Before I listened to this episode, I didn't know much about the volcano and what "Pele’s hair" is. However, the host explained that Pele is the goddess of volcanoes in Hawaii, and when the volcanoes erupt, the lava comes out and rapidly cools down because of the fresh air, thus creating fiberglass. (thin and soft, like hair)

Moreover, the host also mentioned the local people’s attitude toward this issue: when some experts from around the world told them to take some precautions to prevent the lava from going to the main roads, the local people claimed that it was Pele’s creation, humans should not change the natural phenomenon.

For further information, please see this channel's website: https://open.spotify.com/show/1SrXSePLtCr70poP7uyZOO?si=Y9bie_1aTwan6Og-zYu1jw

In this episode of the "I Can't Sleep Podcast," we can learn about the trumpet. This musical instrument has been around for a long time, and that sounds so boring, but it was meant to make you fall asleep. The podcaster, Benjamin Boster reads through all these slightly dry topics and more with his unhurried-to-the-point-of-catatonia tone, his stated mission being “to bore you to sleep with my soothing voice”. If you can't sleep from his voice and the boring topic, at least you can learn some trivia that few people care.

I’ve been listening to podcasts back in those days when I have to take a bus to school, and I will use the time on the bus listening to podcasts to kill some time. And there’s one called “The Daily” by The New York Times that catches my ear since it’s educational and entertaining at the same time. Due to that, this podcast has been one of my favorites from then on.

The episode I’m going to introduce is about the new technology that gets the world’s attention named “chatGPT”. It is a type of language model developed by OpenAI. It is a machine learning model that is trained on a large dataset of text and can generate text that is similar to the training data. ChatGPT is a variant of GPT that is specifically designed for generating text in the context of a chat or conversation. It is trained on a dataset of conversations and can generate responses that are appropriate for a given conversation context. The chat isn’t like any other AI assistance (like Siri or Cortana), it can answer some questions that were set with limitations on answering, and it can even do your school report or have a conversation just like real people. In short, this new technology is a big breakthrough in AI.

In short, the news and knowledge provided by the podcast “The Daily” can always keep you track of what’s happening worldwide now, I believe everyone must give it a try.

By the way, here’s a link to chatGPT, and you can use Mandarin or English to talk to it.

https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/

This is my first time listening to a podcast. Since I enjoy watching the American superhero series "The Umbrella Academy," I decided to give "The Umbrella Podcademy" a try. This podcast is hosted by Alex, Justin and Pete from Comic Book Club, and they will talk about their opinions of each episode of "The Umbrella Podcademy" and analyze the plot and the mental states of the characters. The episode I listened to is talking about season 3 episode 9 of the series, "Seven Bells." The story in this episode is about the Hargreeves family is facing the end of the world, and the decision is whether they are going to save the world but must go to a room where somebody already dies for unknown reason, or just stay in the original world and wait to die.

The most impressive part for me is when the hosts explain their ideas of who in the Hargreeves family stood on the side of saving the world or not, and why they did or didn’t. The hosts also describe the situation as the Titanic: If you were a member of the orchestra on the sinking ferry, would you listen to the conductor’s order to continue playing music? Just as the host says, if it is the end of the world, no one would listen to the command of their boss, so do the members of the Hargreeves family. Briefly speaking, I consider this podcast as an amusing unit for those who’ve watched the TV series.

This is an interesting podcast channel hosted by a pair of sisters, Belen and Mya Benway.

Christmas is coming to town, in this episode the sisters have brought to the table a bunch of new ideas to celebrate Christmas and taught us how to get in the spirit. Their contents were categorized into four topics: activities, food & drink, movies and fashion trends. I found it quite easy to follow their talk and the ideas were indeed "non basic" as they had claimed.

The two girls started off their podcast by sharing their daily life recently, and the flow was just so smooth that I felt as if I was a part of the conversation.

Firstly, they discussed about what activities that we can do in these days. I loved it when Bey (Belen) shared that last week she had her house cleaned out and donated her no-longer used things to the charity. Besides, going to our favorite coffee shop with a group of friends to taste test all of the Xmas drinks was also a nice idea from Mya. Then they went on talking about the food and drink which they had tried in this holiday month. Bey mentioned about the "hot cocoa bomb drink" and it sounded so good that I would definitely give it a try if I had a chance. Their movies part was amazing as well, which were mostly rom-coms and suitable to watch with family or friends. Last but not least, their fashion advices unexpectely suited my taste so much that took me by surprised.

On a whole, I truly enjoyed this episode of their podcast until the very last minute.
Inside the FBI - Health Care Fraud

https://open.spotify.com/episode/4orr4ixpPiHEJMDJIUqtaB?si=po4POD5WQASVeCOLuyoYZg

In this episode, the speakers tell us that health care fraud might involve a large amount of money, and it might have a wider impact than we think. After the COVID 19 pandemic took place, some dishonest people committed telemedicine fraud by giving prescription for expensive and unnecessary medication. The speakers noted that drug diversion, which is the illegal use of prescription medication, is the most serious type among all kinds of health care fraud in that it can cause real-life impacts. A case of this happened in Utah in 2014 was mentioned. Officials discovered a group of patients infected with a rare strain of Hepatitis C. This disease is transmitted by sharing needles, however, the 7 patients had no known connections with each other. The investigation indicates that they were treated in the same emergency room by the same nurse, Elet Neilsen, who has that same strain of virus. She diverted the patients' drugs for her own use by injecting the drug into herself first, then injecting the remainder into her patients. Since this disease is chronic, the victims might have to live with the symptoms for the rest of their lives. The criminal was sentenced 5 years in prison in 2020. Thompson, who is one of the workers that worked this case, said that the FBI used the pay and chase model to solve cases like this. At the very end of this episode, the speakers suggested we watch our cards regarding health insurance and medical care lest our identity be stolen. It is also advised that we check our explanation of benefits. There would be a red flag if you notice a procedure or prescription you don't recognize.
After listening to this episode, actually I felt quite sad because we may have to be aware of a fraud even when we're in need of urgent medical care. In my opinion, health care fraud should be sentenced and criticized more seriously since it can not only be a peril, but also cause financial burdens to the public if money is involved.

It is relatively short, so I can listen to a full episode whenever I have time. Also, the content is interesting and the host’s expression is very clear.

The episode I listened to was mainly about how to present what you learned. The host talked about the technique of changing what you learned. It is useful to think beyond the conference. For example, when you are reading a book, think about how you describe the main point to a friend, and then do it. You will retain more information from the book. I think it’s a good way to try.

The program tells stories of people living in Taiwan as well as Taiwanese people living abroad.
One of the interviews I found interesting is the one with Cheng Ming-Dean, the Director-General of the Central Weather Bureau.

My favorite murder is a podcast talking about murder crime stories from their friends and fans in a hilarious way. In this episode, minisode they called, they shared the letters which were sent by their listeners, telling different stories about different things, including weird Titanic accident occuring in their family, bizzare figure they encountered in a World War II bunker when they were just children, even some entertaining stories where drunk people drove in front of the policeman in order to evacuate from tsunami.

I used to listen to some podcasts before, but mostly about news. I've never tried other types before, and this is the first time I tried this kind of catagory, which is surprisingly fascinating to me. Listening to the hosts sharing weird stories from different places in a conversational, interactive tone of voices actually made me much more chilling in comparsion to listening to the news.

When I have a listening program, I will take some notes and write down the keywords about the whole content. In this way, I don’t need to memorize everything in the audio file. Besides, I will also adjust speech speed when I can't hear clearly, which can help me know more about the meaning that the speaker wants to express. Listening to the intonation of the speaker is also a good way to realize the speaker’s attitude about the topic. It can help me to know more about what the content the speaker wants to share.

The topic of the podcast is talking about how to improve our English speaking skill.
1.Find a English video on Youtube.
After seeing the video, we can describe what happened in the video and try to share our own opinion for 2-3 minutes. Doing this work once a day can help us to express our idea and to improve our ability to describe a thing.
2. Find a new word to learn in a day.
Most students will spend much time learning words and grammar; however, learning a word in a day and using the word to make a sentence which is related to our life is a good way to improve our conversation with other people.
3. Don’t use your mother tongue to think how to speak English.
Spend 5-10 minutes thinking about your day and speaking out loud in English(Don’t mind if the grammar is right or not). Besides, we can also open the camera to record the process. It can help us have confidence in speaking English.
4.Read out the books or article loud
Reading out can help us to listen to our pronunciation. After doing that for a long time, we will be familiar with the pronunciation of the word. It can improve our pronunciation.

The 3 listening skills I often use when listening to podcast

Note taking

Explanation:

In the first place, When taking notes, instead of writing down the full sentences, I prefer to write phrases. This can not only help me to better retain information from mass notes, but reduce the time of taking notes. Secondly, I’ll take notes in my own words, which helps myself to understand and remember what I hear.

      2) Content visualization

Explanation: As for me, the most frequently used way of content visualization is screenshot and take note of it. Therefore, you can look at the picture directly and retain both image, text and diagram. This can boost the absorption of knowledge.

      3) Highlight keyword / sentence

Explanation: I will use symbols and color to mark sentence structure and emphasize the keypoint. How do I use symbols to highlight keywords? I use underline, circle, star, etc. to sort key information examples, definitions. Besides, I also Use color to highlight major sections, main points and diagrams. These can help find your note more quickly.

4) practice in topic content (Example)

I use the above mentioned skills when listening to this podcast, and summarize the notes below. The topic of this episode is about:

1. Occam’s Raz, a professor who embraces simplicity. His notion is when there’s a complicated explanation and a simple explanation, the simple explanation is right.

2. One example of Matt Sagalnik at Princeton, he shows that simplicity is better. On the other hand , Occam’s Razor was not right, because he stated that given a simple explanation and a complex one, that you should choose the complex one.

Before listening: Read the introduction of the episode

* Explanation : Before listening to the podcast, I will always read the brief introduction to get some basic information first. In this manner, not only can I clarify the purpose of the episode content, but I can predict what the host may talk during the podcast. Both of the benefits can help me understand the podcast clearly.

2. During listening : Note taking

* Explanation : If one wants to record what they learned on something, note taking must be a smart way. During the process of listening to the podcast, I will write down some key words, which can be vocabularies, phrases, or even some interesting facts. The biggest advantage of this strategy is that I can review what I learned once I finished listening.

3.After listening : replay the episode

* Explanation : After finishing your listening, it is also important to figure out whether there still are some knowledges that make you confused. To solve this problems, I will replay or reverse the episode more than one time until I realize all the knowledges. Therefore, I can not only listen more clearly, but learn the native pronunciation and how native speakers reduce, cut and connect the sounds.

Example

Strategy 1: In the introduction of the episode, I know that the topic of the conversation will be jokes. Moreover, it also mentioned some jokes may contain more than one meaning, which let me notice that I should pay more attention and think more when I listen to those jokes in the episode.

Strategy 2: I did take some notes when listening to the podcast, which can be seen on the picture above.

Strategy 3: Actually, I didn’t understand some jokes when they said really fast the first time. Therefore, I reversed the audio to the time points where I lost.

3 skills I use when I listen to the podcast.

1. Note taking: Note taking is a basic method that one can easily get started with. Write down some key words during listening. The key words involve some vocabulary, phrases and important information which can help us recall some details of the content.

2. Write the new words: Write down some words that I can't understand when first listening. Since I maybe can't spell the words correctly, I will try to spell the words through listening to the pronunciation of the words and google it later.

3. Replay the podcast: Since it may be difficult to understand the whole content totally when first listening due to some factors like the speakers' accent, the speed and so on, replaying the episode helps us to know the content more completely.

Example:
This episode is about the tragedy that happened in the crowd surge at Halloween celebration in Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea. While listening, I wrote down some information and words of the news, which was about the situation, the process, and the end of the tragedy. Besides, there was some vocabulary that I didn't hear clearly at the first time, so I wrote them down after I replayed the episode. What's great was that the speakers would choose some vocabulary that were relatively hard for the listeners and explain them, so I could not only learn about the news but also some vocabulary simultaneously.

Here are the three listening skills for me while I listen to podcasts.

First, I would guess what kind of information it was going to convey by the information in its title and description. Through this action, I can be well prepared for what I will listen to later and suggest some possible relevant information that I have learned before. As the result, new knowledge and information can be absorbed nicely while reciting old relevant memory again.

Next, I will take some notes as I listen. Most of the time, I just write down some of the main topics and important words or concepts, but if I know I'm dealing with information that will take time to organize and understand, I'll also draw something like a mindmap.

Lastly, I will recite the stuff that I just heard in my own words and check if there’s anything wrong. This step can help me to know if I understand every word and sentence in this podcast while checking my note is there anything I missed or understood in a wrong way. I count myself as fully understanding once I can get everything right with my own words.

Take the podcast “Did the Artificial Intelligence Just Get Too Far?” from The Daily as an example. I first guessed about what I'm going to listen to is maybe related to AI, generated pre-train transformers, and databases. Then, I’ve done some notes while listening, it helps me construct a basic understanding of nowadays AI models and the specific AI named “chatGPT”. In the end, I recited every piece of stuff I just heard after finishing the podcast.

1. Focus on content words- Using this strategy will make me more clearly know what the speaker want to emphasize in a sentence. Due to having lots of contents in one episode, we have to catch the important concept which is the speaker wanting to reveal.
For instance, “So, if you don’t want to spend ALL of your leisure time SCROLLING, you need to have ANOTHER sort of fun that is equally assessable.”
2. Detecting signposts- there are lots of transition words that the podcaster will use. We need to notice all the time so that we can immediately catch the change of theme.
For example, “BUT I do spend money on chief music and puzzles that I like.”
3. Predicting contents- after seeing the title of this podcast episode, we can predict what we will hear in this episode. Meanwhile, if we guessing correct about the content, we will have impressive memory about the content.
Take me for an example, when I saw this title Fun at home doesn’t have to be free, I think the podcaster will mention some ways that can entertain at home and need to pay it.

Taking notes

For me, taking notes will be an effective strategy to help myself understand and avoid forgetting the content. For example, when I listened to "The Umbrella Podcademy," I wrote some key words such as "conflict" "save the world?" In this case, I may remember this part was talking about "The family had a conflict due to the decision of saving the world or not."

Predicting content

Secondly, I will try to predict the following content. If I have a rough idea of the following content, I won't be overwhelmed by the huge amount of information. For instance, before I listened to this podcast, I had read the title and predicted that this episode was going to talk about the seven bells that appeared in the TV series. In addition, during the listening, I tried to guess the next topic would be Reginald and Five's mindset when I heard the hosts talking about the scene of the two having drinks on the edge of the ruins.

Focus on main ideas

Last but not least, I consider focusing on the meaning rather than form an important strategy when listening.

The Listening Skills That I Frequently Use When Listen to the Podcast

1.Note-taking
It is a vital skill that I use whenever it is a listening test or get information from the speakers. By taking notes, it helps me to keep words from the speakers so I won't miss the concept of the talk. My opinion is that the essence of note-taking skill is to write fast and keep the words or sentences as intuitive as you can. Afterwards, all you need to do is to connect what you have written into a complete information web.

Example: In this episode, I heard a new word, Mauna Loa. However, I did not know what it is and how to spell it correctly, so I just wrote down ‘Monaloa’ intuitively. Then, I keep listening till the end, and find out the ‘Monaloa’ I wrote is actually two words. But that’s fine because as you write down the similar word, you won’t go too far.

2. Visualization (create information web) Gathering your notes into a network, the function is to sort out the information you get.

Example: After listening to the Podcast, I arrange the keywords that I wrote into a web.(please see the attached file)

3. Repeat
Just replay the part that is puzzling you. Maybe play it again but slower.

1. Predicting the Contents
Mostly, pages of podcasts provide their introductions including topics, outlines, and a brief description for each episodes. Use these informations to predict what things they are going to talk about. Take me for example, "My Favorite Murder" is the podcast I chose, and its content, which is about sharing scary stories about murder from their listeners in a hilarious way, can be easily predicted according to its topic and outlines. Furthermore, after seeing the description the episode, I realized that in this episode, unlike others, they're going to share the letters sent by their listeners. Instead of simply listening, guessing the contents can make you comprehend much easier.

2. Don't be too persistent in every meaning of words
Just like scanning an article, sometimes you might encounter some words you've never met before. Instead of insisting on them, sometimes we should just leave it. It may eventually be mentioned in the following content, which you can guess by the informations you have about this word. Take me for example, I knew nothing about "bunker" at the first time when I heard this word, but as it kept mentioning this word in the following content, I can guess the meaning of this word, which is some kind of abandoned buliding. Even though I didn't get the exact meaning, I can still understand the content.

3. Pay attention on keywords
A most common but still skill-needed strategy. Keywords can help understand the content, which I guess most of us have already known. Keywords are not just limited to the words correlated to the content. Sometimes they also include some conjunctions or sequence words, helping the whole story go on. Take me for example, in the episode I listened to, the speakers were sharing the letters from fans, so everytime I heard "Next", I knew that the story of this letter had finished, and it was moving on to the next letter. The tip is focuse on the words that speakers put more stress on. These are the words we should notice.

1. Listen for key words
Listening for key words is important. Because the speakers talk fast, writing down every word from the content is impossible. Instead, I only focus on the key words and key concepts mentioned by the speakers. This saves me time when taking notes.

Example: I think the speakers of the podcast Inside the FBI talk a little bit fast, and the content is quite complicated. At first, I was trying to catch every word, but I found it quite hard to do so. When I listened for the second time, I changed my strategy to listening just for the key words. Because I only write down a few words in a sentence, this time I have enough time to take notes and I was less likely to miss out an important concept the speakers mentioned subsequently.

2. Note-taking
When listening to podcasts on topics that interest me, I often take notes so that I can remember the things in the podcast. When listening to an English podcast, I would also write down new vocabularies and collocations.

Example: When I was listening to this episode, I wanted to know more about the details of the case, so I write down the information mentioned in the podcast. After listening to the podcast, I looked up on the Internet for more information on this case. I also learned some vocabularies from this episode such as telemedicine.

3. Mind map
Making a mind map is a good way to generalize all of the ideas I learned from a podcast. Besides, later when I want to review what concepts are mentioned in the podcast, I can just simply look at the mind map and recall from my memory.

Example: I made a mind map after listening to the episode because it could help me understand better. There are many details in this episode, and thus I think this strategy was useful in this case.

Three Listening Skills That I Use

1. Note Taking
I will try to find the main point of the topic of that podcast. For example when they are talking about politics, then I will focus on what country are they talking about, what kind of political problems they are talking about whether it is about the citizens or the governments.

2. Listen to it again
Sometimes it won’t be enough if we just listen to it once, just like when we are listening to music, there’s a time when we need to listen more than once. It is just like what people usually said, the more you listen the more you will understand it.

3. Memorizing
This method is the most frequent method that I use, in my highschool I usually stay focused on what teachers say and will try to memorized everthing they said in once. Eventually, this skill has been used by me since than, I won’t say this is the most effective skills for most of us but I would say it kind of effective for me. Listen and memorizing on the first time listening to it and just try to repeat all the topic in your mind after that.

The podcast I listened:
The history and psychology of hormonal birth control

Strategic 1.
Note Taking in Listening as well as in Reading:

Once the speaker is speaking something important or mentioned , I will writing it on my note book. Later, I will get my summary by organising my note I writed.

-As I was listening to the podcast, she mentioned that psychological side effects:
For instance,This is my note :

Hormonal birth control can increase or cause depressive symptoms, mood swings, negatively impact sleep patterns and influence libido and sexual functioning. This can impact our psychological experiences and mental well-being.

Strategic 2.
Speeding the Podcast, to Ensure that I was Focusing on the Speaker at the same time.

Due to podcaster did not directly talk about her main points. Consequently, I prefer to use speeding the podcast so that I can concentrate on catching her keywords.

For example,This is my brief summary when I was listening to it:

Hormonal birth control artificially increases the levels of progesterone and estrogen in the body. This prevents ovulation by suppressing the release of important hormones for pregnancy and mestruation and increases vaginal mucus to prevent the entry of sperm.

Strategic 3
Listening Again in order to Recognizing Literal Meaning:

I was listening to the part mentioned that hormonal birth control's history. I paid attention to it again and again because I tried to catch the podcaster's details:

This is my brief summary(example 3):

Humans have been using birth control methods, such as spermicides, sponges, condoms and toxic metals for thousands of years. The first clinical trials for the pill began in the 1950's when birth control was still illegal in the US. Pioneers of this new technology include a heiress and millionaire, a Catholic gynaecologist and a famous sex educator and advocate. But it has a dark history.

This is my first time listening to an all-English podcast. However, I realize it is a useful way to train my listening skills and learn various topics or knowledge.

In this episode, the hosts, Lindsay and Michelle, talk about “Why asking for help shows confidence in English”. First of all, they mention that children are often taught to be independent. Therefore, they may be afraid to show lack of confidence and pretend to understand. In addition, the hosts discuss some consequences when one is not clear but do not express doubts, such as miss something important or get the direction wrong. Last but not least, the hosts suggest some appropriate questions and possible solutions. In short, this subject is very appealing to me and easy for beginners to get started.

https://open.spotify.com/episode/1igVUT1uPkxqhtBp2QSZ5d?si=1EQ_W2vGQZGTAkHzXDjYRQ&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A6qXldSz1Ulq1Nvj2JK5kSR

Listen to it more than just one time: After the following two step, there might be something you still don't understand it well or unclear. In this case, I will repeat it again and again until I fully understand about it, maybe slow down the speed a little bit so I can hear it clearly.

The first strategy I use is guessing the topic. For example, when listening to the podcast the topic would be stressed or specially mentioned by the podcaster and it’s easy to understand what the podcaster wants to mention.

The second strategy is taking a little note. From this, one can remember what the podcaster said before and the listener can review it more clearly in their way. For example, we can write down the topic and the similar or opposite contents the podcaster mentioned.

The final strategy is listen to more English podcasts and try to get more experience in listening in English. For me, I listened to “Learning English while commuting in 15 mins” for learning, “I Can’t Sleep Podcast” before falling sleepy to learn trivia or getting tired faster.
