TS3: When Robert finally found someone suited to be his friends, he used divine imagery on that stranger, describing him like how he was describing his voyage in the earlier letters, displaying how having a friend was as important to him as his ambition is.

TS1: From the start of his journey, Walter is seen to be very determined to share his knowledge with the world. He is also extremely confident in the success of his trip as well as his own abilities, to the point where he thinks he can control natural elements.

TS2: Another of Walter's expectations in life, other than the success of his journey, is the fulfilling friendships he wishes to gain. He is seen as a fervent man, and has deep desires to foster a rich friendship with someone. He shows this through a list of ideal qualities he looks for in a friend.

TS3: Although he has all these expectations, his overconfidence and yearning juxtapose his real state, where he is friendless and isolated. Shown through the parallels of himself and the creature.

Mary Shelley portrays Walton as a representative of human progression at the period of the Romantic movement. The letters reflect the basic arguments of the period: the humane vs the industrial. Walton’s journey is similar to that of Victor’s thirst for knowledge but he has the option to not go down Victor’s path and follow the humane.

TS 2: However, his path to gaining knowledge, like the “modern” man”, will lead to the constant feeling of isolation, demonstrating the presence of humanity in Walton that is missing from Victor at the end.
