         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Understanding Chelicerates</strong></p><p>Chelicerates (Chelicerata) are a type of arthropod, which is a group of animals that includes harvestmen, scorpions, mites, spiders, horseshoe crabs, sea spiders, and ticks. There are about 77,000 different kinds of chelicerates alive today. Chelicerates have two main body sections and six pairs of legs. Four pairs of these legs are used for walking, while the other two pairs, called chelicerae and pedipalps, are used for eating. Chelicerates do not have mandibles (jaws) or antennae (feelers).</p><p>Chelicerates are very old animals that first appeared around 500 million years ago. Some of the earliest chelicerates were giant water scorpions, which were the biggest arthropods ever, growing up to 3 meters long! The closest living relatives to these giant water scorpions are horseshoe crabs.</p><p>In the past, chelicerates were mostly hunters, but today they have developed many different ways to find food. Some chelicerates eat plants (herbivores), some eat dead matter (detritivores), some are hunters (predators), some live off other animals (parasites), and some eat leftovers (scavengers).</p>]]></description>
