Key Concept: "Sticks of doom"- Every student writes their name on a lollipop stick. They are then all collected, placed in a beaker and used for questioning. Even if you see a student off task, you can call their name and pretend it is the name on the stick you just selected. Hence it is also a tool for classroom management.

Key Concept: "Visual Timer"- The students are given a specific time frame during which they have to complete a task. The teacher can place a stopwatch on the overhead projector and hence this puts the students in control of managing their time in answering the given task. This relates to one of the Junior Cycle key skills of Managing Myself.

NB: Can also be used as a stimulus to engage.

Through-out the lesson students can place a named or anonymous question in the box for the teacher to answer. The idea of the question box works especially good for sensitive topics like Human Reproduction and Human Digestion.

Key Concept: "Post it notes"- I think that this method can be especially helpful for gauging prior knowledge at the start of the class. Each student writes anything they know about the topic on a sticky note and they are stuck to a wall in the class. Also at the end of the lesson students can write what they now know after the class and any questions they still have.

Key Concept: "Traffic Lights"-
Method 1: Cones.
Teacher places three take away cups on each desk. One green, one red, one orange. The students are working on a task. If they have the red cup on the top they are "totally lost". Orange = Need a bit of help. Green = No help needed.

Method 2: Worksheets
Teacher provides a traffic lights worksheet at the end of the class. It is a form of Self assessment. If students have completely grasped a concept they mark the green box. Or if they are totally lost on a concept they mark the red box. I would also use this in the middle of my class as a form of formative assessment.
