Exploring clay as a material

Clay holds a profound significance in early childhood education as it serves as a versatile and invaluable tool for fostering holistic development. Working with clay also offers a sensory experience that activates several senses, promoting holistic development. (Sutapa, P et al., 2021). children enhance their fine motor skills, engaging in activities like pinching, rolling, and shaping that lay the groundwork for future dexterity, including writing skills. Moreover, clay encourages imaginative thinking and self-expression, allowing children to create and explore without limits, nurturing their creativity. This sensory-rich medium not only aids in the development of problem-solving abilities but also facilitates social interaction and language development as children share their ideas, collaborate on projects, and engage in meaningful conversations about their creations. some used soft oil crayons by experimenting with the different colours and marks to represent their interpretation of the animal homes. Others re-created animal dens using clay and recyclable objects (Cadwell, 26). For example, last time when I visited my friend house, I saw my friend daughter who is around 4 years old was playing with clay dough. She was making ring, bangles, snail, and different animal using her imagination skills. Clay can be a valuable tool for nurturing holistic development in young children while making learning enjoyable and memorable.

Exploring paint as material

Exploring paint as a material in early childhood is an excellent way to foster creativity, fine motor skills, and sensory development in young children. Kurnia’s research results (2015) showed that the results of early childhood creativity in painting in the group of children who were given finger painting activities were higher than the group of children who were given brush painting activities, and there was a correlation between painting activities and fine motor development on the creativity of young children early in painting. Children can use painting as a non-verbal means of expressing their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. They are inspired to think creatively and find their individual artistic voices as a result. The act of holding and controlling a paintbrush, mixing different colours, and making precise movements helps children to develop fine motor skills. Not only, this but also from painting children can express love. For example, while I was doing my first placement, I had found one child sitting on corner and making love heart with red colour. I asked her is that for me she told me that its for her mum whose birthday is today and wants to give her love heart. So, through painting children express their emotions and feelings. It can help them understand and manage their emotions, promoting emotional intelligence.
