Robert, you make a great point. Let me share my experience. I saw an email from who I later learned was our school's ELL "Program Leader," a 6th grade teacher at our k-8 offering to do a little after school ELL training for any teacher who was interested. Because I had about 3 or 4 ELL students in one class and was trying to expand my teaching practice/skills, I went. I was the only teacher there. :/ I think there are plenty of opportunities -- even a simple search on the internet for reaching ELLs is so helpful -- I wonder if perhaps the issue is more teacher interest/buy-in/knowledge about ELLs? All training I have received at my campus has been helpful.

Students who reject academics because of trauma may not be ready to learn yet. They may still need to learn they can feel safe in their environment. As a teacher, I think we can help these kids by first helping them know they are loved and valued. We can make a connection with them. As that relationship develops, the student will be able to come to a point where they are more ready to take on academics. -Heather

For students experiencing trauma that won't engage academically- build a relationship first. Even if it's rough going. Try choosing one thing that's an interest of theirs and see if you can work that one thing in to try and help them feel successful. Be willing to talk and listen and eventually even bargain as that relationship gets stronger. Pick your battles.

I would change the conversations we are having with students and talk about the hard subjects. This class has really challenged me to do that and I've had amazing conversations with my students and I can really feel their desire to talk about these topics. It's been an amazing year because of this!
Angie
