Before the war:

France was always known to produce great artists. It is home to one of the most beautiful city in the world, Paris, or the “City of Love.”

Woman were mainly just worked as mothers and in the house. They didn’t get very much respect and weren’t used to their full capability.

After the war:

The French were looking for a way to cheer themselves up because, like the majority of the countries a lot of land was destroyed and many people died.

In the 1920s, things like going out to operas, the circus, and music hall shows became very popular. People would go out even on the weeknights which isn’t very popular in other countries like the U.S.

Woman were also very respected after the war. The had a chance to prove themselves to everyone when all the men were away at war.

A new style of art was also created. It was called Dada. Dada was an anti-war movement within the world of art. It encouraged anti-war feelings and helped support the lower class.

The people of France experienced a sense of freedom that was never experienced before. Many historians argue that is was no doubt the ‘golden age’ for France.

France's Government:

Before World War 1 France's government was a Republic as a result of the French Revolution.

After World War 1 France's government became a democracy. This was unstable because there were still mixed emotions from the French Revolution on what the government should be. People of France became to lean more towards Liberalism, and focusing on change and views of the citizens. The people got more of a say on government decisions and women gained more respect.

France's Foreign Relationships:

Before World War 1 France and Germany disliked each other because Germany was always trying to diminish France as an international power. In addition, Germany allied with lots of nations so there was no one else left to ally with France, as a result this created the Triple Alliance with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Once the Triple Alliance was made, France allied with Great Britain and Russia to form the Triple Entente out of fear of Germany's power.

After World War 1 France continued to disapprove of Germany because they claimed the Germans were the reason for starting the war. But they did gain some new allies (in addition to the allies they fought with during the war), Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Poland. These new nations came to be from the Central Power's punishment, when they suffered severe land loss and new countries were made. Lastly, France joined the League of Nations, which allowed them to be involved in solving worldly disputes.

Overall, France's political change was quite positive because they gained a newer, more modern form of government that for the most part the people were satisfied with because they had a voice and more respect. Also, they got more allies and were involved in making world peace in the League of Nations. These things made France more powerful because of happy citizens, more allies, and loss of enemy land.

France's Economy

Before World War 1 France was the 2nd greatest industrial and trading nation. Most of the French exports were luxury goods which could beat the high tariffs. France's economy was also very self-sufficient which means they didn't depend on any other nations.

After World War 1 France preferred loans over taxes which was good for the citizens because they didn't get money taken from them and also they could possibly pay back their loans. Around the 1920's, France slowly began to make progress again as the country began to recover and people started to spend money again. Throughout the twenties France gained back the large amount of wealth they had before the war. Exports had some contribution to the economic success it was mostly investments within the country. The time of growth starting in 1926 was called "Franc Poincare."

Why did France experience this economic change?

France experienced this slow increase of money because, of two reasons. The first reason is this was slow because of all of the causalities. About 10 million were either hurt or killed. This meant a loss of workers and just their population in general. The second reason was the increase which started because of investments into the country. France experienced a slow increase of money

However, 40 years before the Great War, Germany had seized Alsace-Lorraine from France.
