Their conflicting emotions are restrained by the societal norms that they bound themselves by.

We both focused on the dialogue, the change in between dialogue, and the formality of the duel itself.

Through dialogue, narrative pace and tone, Smollett highlights the ability of societal norms to dictate the time and duration of emotional outbursts while maintaining standards of formality.

Through the use of contrasting dialogue, varying tones, and dynamic narrative pace, Smollett reveals that society’s expectations are the bridle that reins in human emotions.

Our similarities included: formal discussion underlined by the constant sarcasm in both Pickle’s and Gauntlet’s tone. We both followed with a commentary of the eruption of hostilities and the rapid falling action, but while Chris favored the use of small little pieces of evidence from the text, Lynn used much longer quotes followed by detailed implicit analysis.

"Tobias Smollett conveys in his novel, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, that the aggressive confrontation between Peregrine Pickle and Godfrey Gauntlet went against societal norms of behavior and was therefore unnecessary, avoidable, and unsafe with the use of dialogue, diction, and tone. "

"By using dialogue, narrative pace, and tone that reveals Godfrey Gauntlet’s uncontrollable anger and frustration toward Mr. Pickle, Smollett reveals how social propriety holds precedence over emotions in society. "

Summary - Caylene and I had similarities in the fact that we both used the same examples for tone and dialogue on how the confrontation was very aggressive. We both noticed the passive aggressiveness in the beginning which transitioned into actual physical aggression. We differed in the devices we used in the middle of the passage, with Caylene using narrative pace and I using diction as a way to promote our thesis and describe the shifts.

We also both found the fight interesting. As they were "nobly" fighting, they lost sight of what they were fighting for.
