As trade aggreements begnan to collapse, and settlers continued to push into the ohio river valley,  Pokunoket chief Metacom , a.k.a. King Philip, led a bloody uprising of Wampanoag, Nipmuck, Pocumtuck and Narragansett tribes. The rebellion laster a little more than a year, and lead to the destruction of twelve eurpean settlements. The rebellion ended abruptly with the capture, and subsequent death, of Chief metacom. The end of this rebellion was crucial in solidifying a hold for the british in the northeast, as well as strengthening the Puritans belief that they had a divine right to continue life the way they were. The puritans viewed their victory over the inferior natives as a sign that God favored their praise, and lifestyle, only strengthening their strict lifestyle.

It soon covered most of what is now considered new england. The puritans believed that it was their duty to make pure again the church of england. They also believed in honoring God, and this mean community faith, Individual belief, and overall harmony. The puritans believed that if they failed to honor God their settlements would fail, which lead to very strict laws that perforate most of American history. Although their faith in their cause was strengthened after the Rebellion of "king phillip." Williams believed that it was necessary to have complete seperation of church and state, and that people should be allowed to practice religion as they saw fit, not the government. Naturally, Roger williams was banished from the Massachusettes bay colony, although he did go on to found the colony of Rhode Island, which became a safe haven from the puritans.
