Tuesday, November 6, 1860 was the day Abraham Lincoln was the day the election took place, and the day Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin were announced to be the next president and vice president of America. The way his election led to the civil war was started before he was elected. Slave states were threatening to separate from the united states if the republican party won, aka the anti-enslavement party. When Abraham Lincoln won, a confederate by the name of General P.G.T Beauregard opened fire on Fort Sumter in April of 1860. Then for 34 hours, 50 confederate guns and mortars shot at the fort. Two days later, the U.S Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. The more days after, and Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to calm down the south. This was the spark to start the civil war, which was a clear part of that cycle of conflict

The Fugitive slave act was part of the compromise 1850 where enslaved would have to be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. Meaning enslaved people couldn't every be free at all. The north didn't agree with with the south and there would be violent protest against the fugitive slave act. This event led to the Civil war because of the tension between the northern and southern states regarding what side they were taking on slavery.

From 1854-1859, a small civil war emerged between advocates for pro- and antislavery advocates for the control of the new territory of Kansas under beliefs of popular sovereignty. Sponsors of the Nebraska-Kansas expected the idea of fanaticism that has been splitting the country due to the issue of slavery, but it ended up doing the opposite. Proslavery advocates were coming in from Missouri, those who were against came from the north forming armed emigrant groups, and both started to form guerrilla bands.

The compromise of 1850 was a series of acts passed in 1850 about the ongoing issues about slavery between the southern and northern states.

The first act was to amend the act entitled "An Act respecting Fugitives from Justice, and Persons escaping from the Service of their Masters," approved February twelfth, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three." which essentially made it easier for slaveowners to recover enslaved people who ran away.

The second act admitted California as a free state, aka a state that didn't allow slavery.

The third act established Utah and New Mexico as territories for the U.S. These territories could decide if via popular sovereignty, if they would permit slavery.

On october 16, 1859, he led a small army of 18 men into the small village of Harpers Ferry. He wanted to seize the arms and ammunition in the federal arsenal, arm slaves in the area and move south along the Appalachian Mountains, attracting slaves to his cause, but because he had to ration or escape routes, he had no hopes. He did succeed in deepening the divide between north and south.

I'm seeing a lot of good stuff here! It's evident that you all jumped into learning about your event(s) and made sure the information was accurate. I can also see how we're all working to show how the event is part of a cycle of conflict and cooperation.

Continue to work on word choice, especially in your claim. In a way, your claim says that a cycle of conflict regarding slavery ... is a cycle of conflict. When you're thinking about how these events all show that slavery was at the heart of the cycle of conflict and cooperation, look for how these events impact slavery, which will help you see where they fit onto that cycle.

Something else we need to work on is focusing on thought process, not on summary. Focus on which pieces of evidence are going to support your claim, and explain (in your own words) how that evidence supports your claim. There's no need to summarize everything about what you discovered, or a chapter you read in a book. We already know that. We want to know what you're doing with it/how you're thinking about it. Let me know if you have questions!
