GREEN BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR MULTI-DWELLING RESIDENTIAL UNITS IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION
India is both a major greenhouse gas emitter and one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to projected climate change. The country is already experiencing changes in climate and the impacts of climate change, including water stress, heat waves and drought, severe storms and flooding, and associated negative consequences on health and livelihoods.

The underlying aspect to take this topic for research is environmental change. Climate change is no longer an environmental issue. This has emerged as one of the greatest economic growth difficulties confronting the planet. Construction industry has a significant role to play in this, as construction-related activities account for 35 to 45 per cent of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Majority of residential or commercial buildings in India are constructed with a very little emphasis on the fact that the office or residential space we occupy could actually be affecting the environment. This happens on account of the ignorance of the advantages of the building structures of green design and eco-friendly practices.

The research will be mainly focusing on the importance of Green building in India with respect to the current scenario and the requirement of designing residences that are energy efficient. A comparative analysis of the two primary rating systems in India will be carried out based on qualitative study of their principles, primary aspects that have been considered for awarding points and certification, implementation of the green building design strategies on Affordable Housing/Residence typology and the procedures or guidelines for each mandatory requirement.

LIMITATION
The research will be limited to analyse only the green building strategies and measures taken by IGBC and GRIHA for Affordable Housing/Residence Typology (Multi-Dwelling) on the basis of guides and books issued by the rating systems. A critical study of each rating system requires quantitative study of each parameters and the guidelines recommended and due to the time constrain and availability of limited information, this research is limited to comparison based on qualitative analysis of the rating systems.
The research analysis is based on the primary data procured from the guides issued by the rating systems. Live case studies and post occupancy surveys that would had helped to solidify the study was not conducted as majority of the research study was done during the COVID19 pandemic.

SIGNIFICANCE
-This research will help in giving an extensive awareness on the current scenario in India and the significance of Green Building technology.
-The factors that makes a green building affordable are discussed in this research.
The study is also highlighting the primary rating systems in India and their role in building a greener nation and their system of working. This research will be helpful in understanding the urge of implementing the Greener building strategies especially in case of Residential sector. Green principles and strategies in the residential sector will help tackle national issues such as water efficiency, electricity efficiency, and decreased use of fossil fuel, industrial waste management and natural resource conservation. Most significantly, these ideas will enhance the fitness, satisfaction and wellness of the occupants. The benefits of Green building technology and its significance in this time period will be highlighted throughout this work. Affordable housing strategies will be highlighted after a comparative analysis of the current strategies put forward by the rating systems in India.
