Alicia Elliott strategically compared dark matter to oppression on Native people; both are proven to exist but are not always seen vividly. She points out when crimes committed by white people against Indigenous people seem to not be taken seriously and how the justice system it doesn’t always prevail for Indigenous people. 

 

Ways to Ensure the Credibility of Information:

-           Do a thorough research. 

-           Using current scholarly information.

-           Ensure that the author of the author is an expert at the chosen topic.

-           Information should not be biased. It should be able to defend it’s main idea with concrete data.

 

The most misogynistic thing I have ever heard was, “It is obviously the woman’s fault for wearing such revealing clothes; she was basically asking for it.” The person continues by saying, “Men are naturally sexual people, these urges are natural.” To think that some men will use anything reason to exonerate themselves from believing and acting on something as deplorable as sexual assault, shows the a problem on how society has desensitize men into thinking that they are superior to women and that they can get away with any crime they commit.

-   Secondary sources offer second-hand data and analysis from other scholars. Academic journals, book reviews, and scholarly texts are some examples.

·       Who are your ancestors? Your family, biological or fictive? What are your ties, and which way to they extend? (Out, down, up, all three?) Who roots you?

·       What brought your ancestors to North America? To the U.S.? To Tennessee?

·       Do you know the history of the land you live/work on? Does that history encompass indigenous narratives, or just settler narratives?

·       Have your family or ancestors been impacted by colonization, oppression, structural violence, or war?

·       Have you benefitted from settler systems in North America?

 

I am a first generation immigrant to Canada, originally from the Philippines. My name is Frank Ortiguesa; my last name has Spanish origins and my first name was derived from the name of the saint of my birth date. My ancestry is a mixture of Pre-colonial filipino Indigenous people and Spanish according to my grandparents. My ancestor were first brought to North America to dive for pearls and worked in plantation in Hawaii. My family moved to Canada to escape poverty and get a chance at a better life. The land I live on is under Treaty. May ancestors have been affected by colonization by the Spaniards, Americans and the Japanese. In some way, it helped us get out of poverty but I know that by benefiting in this system we are becoming accomplices to their colonial ways .

Janine Teagues (lead/new teacher)- She is the overly passionate teacher who strives for change but lack life experience and is naïve towards the politics of the school.

Jacob Hill (teacher)- The chatter bug, always has gossip and likes to get attention.

Ava Coleman (principal)- Although she holds the highest position, she is the least put together character; only thinks about herself most of the time.

Barbara Howard (teacher)- She is the gentle and proper teacher; very composed and has a lot of wisdom to impart on the new teachers.

Melissa Shemmenti (teacher)- She is the street smart teacher, very resourceful and has a tough exterior.

Greggory Eddie (new teacher) - Is the best candidate for the principal position but often gets overshadowed by all the other loud personalities.
