Tom Buchanan is a very large and muscular man who is very intimidating to some individuals. He acts racist and tries to seem philosophical even though he ends up coming off as racist and a white supremacist. “Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner” (Fitzgerald 7). “Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body” (Fitzgerald 7). These two quotes both describe Tom and some of his attributes but I was unsure of some of the language such as supercilious and effeminate. When I did research on the word, supercilious, I learned that it means someone who thinks that they are superior to others which fits Toms personality perfectly. Effeminate means to have characteristics that are typical of a woman. Tom is wearing riding clothes that are feminine and you can see his huge body through the effeminate clothing. The author uses the color red to describe some of the way Tom looks and and how is acts. He watches a cat and realizes that he is not the only person outside on this night. His neighbor is standing outside 50 feet away from him standing looking at the water and the dock. “…hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars” ( Fitzgerald 20). The author uses very vivid and interesting colors and items to describe the stars. I would have never thought to refer to the stars as silver pepper. It changes the way that I would envision this scenario. “Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share was his of our local heavens” (Fitzgerald 20). Mr. Gatsby is portrayed as a mysterious man and the author seems like he is trying to portray him as almost a higher being compared to Nick. West Egg is new money with wealthy people of up and coming fortune. East Egg is old money of houses and wealthy families that have had fortune and money passed down or at least have had money a while. The Valley of Ashes is a grey and foggy, sad looking place halfway between West Egg and New York. New York in the 20’s was a large and highly populated center for everything in the East Coast. Tom Buchanan changes his character based on which one of his lovers and what place he is at during that time. Myrtle Wilson does the same thing except for instead of East Egg and New York, she changes personality from The Valley of Ashes and New York. The Valley of Ashes is halfway between West Egg and New York. There are houses and buildings covered in ashes from factories and chimneys that blow smoke into the air. It has a gray coloration everywhere and is always seeming gloomy and sad. There are only gray cars according to Nick, they are lined up in the side of the road with men wearing gray from the ashes. The supposed eyes in the sky I thought were giant clouds of ashes that have come together in a pair floating over the valley, until he describes the yellow and green light to them with no face and so I am not sure what they are anymore. There is a small river that runs through the valley but I can only imagine it is disgusting because of all the smoke and ash.

Jordan is a pro golfer and so she only hangs out with rich people and goes to the parties with the very rich and wealthy. The main ones I have in this chapter are about Gatsby and Jordan Baker. There are a lot of people that attend the party that are suspicious of Gatsby. There are a lot of rumors about Gatsby and the things he has done in his past like him killing people. Jordan Baker is also interesting because she seems to have gotten all of her money from her golf but she seems so entitled that she may have had money from her family before she became a golfer. They both have lots and lots of money but have very different personalities. Nick began to see Gatsby in a new way. Meyer Wolfsheim is based on a real life person who rigged the 1919 World Series and is part of the mob. This causes Nick to realize that Gatsby may also be in shady business with the mob or he may even be in the mob himself. This makes sense because when Gatsby has a party, Nick realizes that he is getting suspicious calls late at night and into the early morning that normal people don’t do. There are also rumors of Gatsby being part of German spies and also that he may have killed someone. Gatsby lies about where he is from. My title would be “Mobster? Fake or Flawed”. I think that this is funny because it could be a title for a documentary. The mobster is because there is now a known aspect that Gatsby has some relations to the mob and could even be in the mob. The fake is because he could be just trying to act his way into being Nick's friend and getting everyone off his back while is in the mob. The Flawed is because he is obviously lying to everyone about where he is from and how he gets his money, but it could be to hide something else that is worse than the mob which is why he acts like oart of the mob as a cover story that is even worse.

It is at the end of a dock in East Egg. We find out that the green light is actually Daisy's house. It stands for Gatsby's relationship to Daisy and how close they are in distance but how far they are in relationship until they meet in Chapter 5. The green light can represent a number of things like the money that is represented in East Egg, the envy that Gatsby has for other people in East Egg and Tom for being with Daisy, and the rebirth or gain of his money as well as a new relationship with Daisy. In our culture today green most represents money, nature, greed, and rebirth/recycling. Some of the things and ways green is represented in the book is still relevant today. Which we know can not be true because San Francisco is not in the Midwest. He actually grew up on the sea with a rich man named Dan Cody and helped him take care of the boat. He learned lots of life skills and began to change his personality from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. This is why he seems so awkward and that the way he acts is not natural, because it’s not natural, it is the way he chooses to act to be different from the way he used to be. He was poor and was supposed to receive money from Dan Cody when he died but Dan Cody was not very smart and so women tried to take advantage of his money. One woman showed up a week before he died and she needed up stealing all of the money from Jay because she knew the legal system.

Daisy loves Gatsby a lot. Daisy also loves Tom, they have a connection and have a child together. They have obviously loved each other and may still have some love left. Tom and Daisy have a child and some sort of love connection. Tom also has a relationship with Myrtle Wilson but he hit her because she talked bad about Daisy so he still loves Daisy. Nick said that he felt like he might have started to love Jordan Baker, but those feelings may have gone away because they have not seen each other in a little while. There are a lot of scandals and love affairs in the book. It makes me wonder if Fitzgerald has had some sort of cheating or affair in his life happen to him.

The biggest thing that is a key aspect and consistent theme throughout the book is the eyes on the cover. Eyes and glasses are referred to many times throughout the story and I think may give some insight into the theme and may help someone who does not understand the book. The rest of the cover is not helpful. There are some lights and what looks like could be buildings or maybe some water beneath or but nothing is identifiable there. There is a streak in the middle of the page that looks like a tear and may show some of the sad aspects of the book. This is a fun Haiku I wrote about the color green in the story about Gatsby's envy and greed for money and love. He was attached to Daisy’s wealth and status that was attached to her. The green is also about nature and there is a lot about weather and nature in the book as well that have other meanings.

I had two titles that I thought were the funniest. “Back To the Future” because it is about Gatsby talking about his past and how he created his identity to bring him to this point in his life and what carved his future which makes the most sense and is very relevant to the plot. My other title that is not as good is just “flashback” or “Blast from the past” which are not as good of titles but they still have to do with the theme. Tom becomes almost in shock for a moment and then for the rest of the chapter is very angry and short temepered. Tom wants to show Gatsby that he knows and so they decide to switch cards and then they go to the city. Everyone but Daisy goes with Tom, including Nick. When they are on the way home from the city they switch back and Daisy is driving this time. When they try and figure out what happened and where Wilson was and retrace his steps. There was an unaccounted for time where they didn’t know where Wilson was. Later they find out he was at Toms. There should have been a chance for Daisy to save Gatsby. If Daisy had told Tom that she was the driver and she killed Myrtle than maybe Tom would have protected her from Wilson and nobody would have died and Gatsby would have survived. The American Dream is very different for every character in the book. It differs based on what the person wants. The American Dream can really be whatever you want that the US can help provide or give opportunities for. For Gatsby, the American Dream was to be some part of old money and marry Daisy. Tom I think just wanted to party and stay rich and wanted to keep oppressing people of color. Daisy wanted to be happy with Gatsby but also wanted to keep her baby with Tom. Nick wanted to make friends and make it rich in the bonds business. Jordan wanted to be the best golfer and to party. Myrtle really wanted to marry Tom so that she could be rich and powerful. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water. . . distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away. . . When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished” (Fitzgerald 21). The weather is gloomy and sad. There are many colors that reflect emotions of sadness and depresssion such as gray and blue. And the weather is cloudy and rainy. Nick is talking to people getting some information about Gatsbys death as well as talking to some people about the funeral. The way that the characters are talking gives off a slow moving and sad vibe as well that goes well in the theme of the chapter.
