Based on the noun, conjugate être in the present tense. For the past participle (the verb expressing the action), remove er/re/ir and add é/u/i. If the noun is plural, you need s at the end of the past participle, and add e if it's a feminine noun. If it's plural and feminine, you add es to it. Lastly, don't forget the irregular past participles; naître and mourir.

A sentence can have BOTH P.C. & imparfait at the same time!
- Sometimes it expresses a cause & effect.
  - Example 1:
    Le chien a dormi(P.C.) parce qu'il était(I) fatigué.
    (The dog fell asleep because he was tired.)

The passé-composé often interrupts the imparfait action.
- Use "pendant que" (while) to indicate that 1 action was completed (P.C.) while another was still happening(I).
  - Example 2:
    Elle est née(P.C.) pendant que nous étions(I) à l'école.
    (She was born while we were at school.)
