The value that I hold as an educator is to create a bridge of learning for multicultural high school students that are learning English. I do this by scaffolding using their L1 in order to strengthen their L2, using lots of visuals and technology, and cultural materials. This always has not been the case as I have struggled in the past to be influenced by different theologies that tried to influence me only to use English. I have never been comfortable with this and have always believed that the L1 is the bridge to make learning accessible. I have also had to set boundaries and loose friendships with people who believe that they have to learn English and didn't understand the process. I did not always speak my truth and for that I am regretful.

The Incident

The incident was recently with a coworker who got upset at other EB teachers who spoke Spanish with the kids to explain things. The kids additionally refused to speak English with her and she would voice her concerns about that. I would sometimes go to push into her class to help students and she would teach not to their level of proximal development. Instead, she would have them do basic grammar instruction or put them on a computer program for the whole period, which is below a lot of the student's zone of proximal development. She did not have the students' interests or learning at heart. She was put in that position, not by choice and she would do the bare minimum without growing or looking into how do teach EB students, she only complained

What I should have done

I allowed her to vent for so long and said nothing. I tried to offer suggestions nicely instead of getting the proper people involved because of trying to preserve the friendship. It took me entering this class and seeing the truth knowing that the way I believed was justified about using L1 as a bridge to learning before finally saying something and taking action.

My goal is to become an EL Instructional Specialist and in doing so I will do research on best practices by going through this master's program to empower teachers to reach our multicultural students using several different strategies. I will always keep the L1 in mind and be an advocate for students as well as educators to make sure that biases are broken and that they have an understanding of how to teach our multicultural students. My visual representation is the sky because it is the venue in which to get to other places in the world just as teachers can reach our students from different cultures around the world.
