Introduction (preperation)

I have planned this lesson for a long term strategy. I teach grade 2 English and I planned this lesson to make my students more culturally aware by exposing them to the idea that people grow up with different persepctives. The goal is to be able to get students to be able to acknowledge different perspectives and in turn be able to celebrate both differences and similarities in cultures. I will know this is successful when the students can explore more multiple perspectives and make connections show appreciaite and awareness for different cultures.

Engagement.

In order to get the students in an International mindset, they need to understand and respect that people have different perspectives (around the globe and locally). To get the students engaged and thinking about multiple perspectives, I have decided to begin the lesson with a story called Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld. I have included a link to a YouTube read aloud:
This a light-hearted picture book that explores whether the main character is a duck or rabbit.
After the story, we will have a discussion about what animal they believe the main character is and why. They will do a craft and write a sentence defending their perspective. We will then discuss how people in the world and in our own classroom see things differently. We will discuss how there is not a wrong answer here as the story does not define what animal the main character is. We will then discuss the word respect and how we respect the perspective of all of our classmates. The goal of this engagement step is to make it relevent to them and set the basis for furthur learning.

Implementation (Step 1)

Each month I would like to focus on a different theme. For example, there are differences/similarities in food, music, literature, crafts/arts, language, etc. Using Inspiration from the book ''The Wild Card'' by Hope King and Wade King, each month I will do a room tranformation to help display the theme around the classroom and immerse the students in it. (The Wild Card is a fabulous book about implementing creativity in the classroom)

Let's say for the first month, I choose the theme music. I would decorate my classroom with different posters of both traditional artists from different countries and current artists from different countries. I will play some music for the students.

I will introduce the topic by engaging in a read aloud, sharing media (music, pictures, etc.) Since the chosen theme of the month is music, I would start by reading the book Happy by Pharrell Williams and then we would listen to the song.
We would then close our eyes and listen to music from multiple countries (both popular/current and traditional). This is perfect to implement when we are learning (past and present. Could have the students guess whether the song is from the past or present)

The students will present their findings to the class. How they present their findings is up to them, they can create a playlist of their favourite songs from that country, learn a traditional dance and record it/present it, or make a playlist of different styles of music.
The students will be asked to discuss at least one difference and one similarity from the country they researched to the country they live in.

A good site to learn dances from around the world is
http://www.folkdancenotes.com/folknote.htm (this gives instructions on how to do traditional dances from many countries. they students many extra support reading the dance instructions.)

I will then upload all of the projects to SeeSaw so they can revisit and show off their hard work to their parents/guardians.

Each month we will visit a new theme. For food, we may create a class cookbook, for language we may learn and explore basic phrases and create a travel book or we can write to pen pals/other students in different school around the world that are also learning English, the possibities are endless.

I will create choice boards for students to work on individually. The students will have to complete 2 out of the 6 tasks on the board. This gives students choice and ownership of their learning. Each choice will be focused on the same material/concept, but is executed in a different way.

Example:
Choice 1: Read this excerpt about music around the world - answer the questions.
Choice 2: Read this excerpt about music around the world - make a brochure.
Choice 3: Read this excerpt about music around the world: Greate a KWL chart.
Choice 4: Create interview questions for a foreign singer.
Choice 5: Write your own song about your culture.
Choice 6: Compare and Contrast music from two different countries.
