In August 1942, The U.S. Navy's first island-hopped to the Guadalcanal and started the first marine division there. Then, in 1943, the U.S. captured the island, the U.S. was the only country that island-hopped during WW2. Its significance was so they could fight against the Japanese Empire after Pearl Harbor, this strategy helped the Allies win the war. It was used to focus heavily on attacking Japanese locations. It was also known as "leapfrogging".

one of the most deadly battles in history which killed 1.2 million people which lasted a very long five months. Adolf Hitler set his sights on Stalingrad because it was named after his rival, Josef Stalin. Hitler's forces had conducted an aerial raid early on in the battle which killed 40,000 civilians. many people believed that the outcome of Stalingrad would determine the fate of the war. At the end of the battle the Soviet Union had surrounded the German forces causing them to surrender; the battle officially ended on Feb. 2, 1943. Stalingrad (now Volgograd), is commemorated by a rather large statue, named "The Motherland Calls," and it's part of the hilltop Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex.

Zibby And Lucas

America and Japanese citizens were involved. The camps were from 1942 to 1946. Many Americans were worried that the Japanese would act as spies or for the Japanese government. These matter because americans were putting Japanese into these camps and they had horrible conditions and were torturing them. One interesting fact is that two thirds of the prisoners in the camps were native-born American citizens.

What countries were involved: From 1942 to 1945, it was the policy of the U.S. government that people of Japanese descent, including U.S. citizens, would be incarcerated in isolated camps.

When: In February 1942, just two months later, President Roosevelt, as commander-in-chief, issued Executive Order 9066 that resulted in the internment of Japanese Americans.

What happened: Internees lived in uninsulated barracks furnished only with cots and coal-burning stoves. Residents used common bathroom and laundry facilities, but hot water was usually limited. The camps were surrounded by barbed-wire fences patrolled by armed guards who had instructions to shoot anyone who tried to leave.

Significance: Camp residents lost some $400 million in property during their incarceration. Congress provided $38 million in reparations in 1948 and forty years later paid an additional $20,000 to each surviving individual who had been detained in the camps.

Interesting Fact: People at the camps were required to fill out a "loyalty" questionnaire to determine how "American" they were. Those that were determined to be disloyal were sent to a special high security camp called Tule Lake in Northern California.
