         <title>Characteristics of EBD</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>EBD is split up into three types of behaviors. There are externalizing behaviors,&nbsp; internalizing behaviors, and low-incidence conditions.&nbsp;<br>Externalizing behaviors (what you can see) include aggression, hyperactivity, impulsivity, noncompliance, or delinquency.&nbsp;<br>Internalizing behaviors (what is less obvious) include anorexia or bulimia, anxiety, or depression.&nbsp;<br>Low-incidence conditions are conditions that do not occur frequently. An example of this is schizophrenia which are extreme delusions, hallucinations, unresponsive behavior, lack of emotional responsiveness, and incoherence. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How do we begin to identify a student with EBD?&nbsp;<br>There are a number of warning signs we should be looking out for when it comes to students who we suspect might need extra support. While this goes for many, if not all disabilities, identification procedures for EBD are important to note, as it can be life or death in some cases. Some signs to look out for include:&nbsp;<br>- extreme mood swings&nbsp;<br>- changes in sleep habits or energy&nbsp;<br>- substance abuse&nbsp;<br>- excessive fear or sadness&nbsp;<br>- confused thinking&nbsp;<br>- distracted in class&nbsp;<br>- changes in eating habits&nbsp;<br>- talk of suicide or self-harm<br>&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How do students with EBD receive special education?&nbsp;<br>Students with EBD will often be placed in a general education classroom with interventions in place to help them succeed.&nbsp; There are some students who have a more severe impact on themselves and possibly those around them who need to be placed in a separate classroom. No matter where the students may end up (as the chart to the left demonstrates), in the school system, they will always have supports in place. PBIS or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is one of the systems that are used for students with EBD and can be used in a general education classroom as well as in a self-contained special education classroom. Other forms of support these students might receive are provided by school counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, or by a social worker.&nbsp; Mental health services might be critical for some students and serve the students in school so they can do their best work. On top of all of this, students with EBD are also offered accommodations such as providing options instead of giving commands for assignments and small group instruction. &nbsp;Other accommodations include preferential seating and extended time for tests and assignments. Students with EBD deserve a chance at equal education and although it might be harder for some students, accommodations and interventions put in place can only help our students grow. </div>]]></description>
