She was cooking her own hotdogs with boiling water on a stove. She also didn't have any adult supervising her while this happened. Jeanette had told the nurses that she would "turn on the stove, and when the water was boiling, [she'd] drop in the hot dogs" (page 11). She had also told the nurses that her mother lets her cook for herself a lot. This is a weakness because they thought that having one kid in the hospital was enough even though their own son cracked his head open and was bleeding all over the place. The father and mother constantly fight and use language that isn't appropriate for their children to hear. This is scarring for their children to see them get into such a big fight and see their mom almost die. This is showing their children that it is okay to leave to avoid getting arrested.
