1) How are the ideas presented in alignment with your current practices? 2) What aspects of Science Notebooks as presented in the chapters could you implement in your next unit? 3) What would you need to be successful?

This year, I am using 1/2 inch binders as Science Notebooks. This took away the need to use valuable time to cut and paste into smaller notebooks.

As the current unit is new to me, I am trying to do it with fidelity. Our training on Science notebooks seems different than the content of this article. The unit has students writing a lot of the same thing at the same time (very "cookie cutter")

The article talks about "student planning" of investigations. I'd like to see more of that as we continue with these units. We need more opportunities for students to design their investigations and to carry them out over a period of time when necessary.

Going forward, I think we need to work together to synthesize the units and find ways to allow students to ask and investigate their own questions. This will take time, and cooperation among stakeholders.

For our next unit we would like to use the notebooks as more student-driven and individualized. We want them to write down more of their predictions, thoughts, questions and reflections rather complete worksheets.
In the beginning we would need time for planning with our grade level around developing essential questions and sample notebook entries. Additional time for us (teachers) to gain a deeper understanding of the content in order to teach it effectively.

Currently, the third grade teachers are teaching the science lessons with fidelity and we are using the science notebooks to make t-charts, answer questions, and keep track of data.

In the next unit, we'd like to use the notebooks to have students reflect more on their learning. For example, the students will make a claim about the investigation and support their thinking with details. We'd eventually like to make the notebooks more student driven.

We need more time to boil down the lessons into more targeted investigations that help students get to the key and main ideas. There is too much teacher talk and not enough discussion or student driven learning. Because the lessons take so long to teach, the teachpoint or objective gets lost and the students do not master the content.

I agree with Ken and I'm using the notebooks in the same way.

3) In order to be more successful with them (and use them more like described in this article) I would need much more time- time to modify the lessons in the unit, time in the day to spend teaching the science lessons, and time to set up for the elaborate hands-on activities included in every lesson. (The teacher prep times listed in the lesson plans are much lower than what I've actually needed to prep).

We feel that students need more time to record their thinking rather than finish the worksheets. This feels like a more authentic way to present and remember information.

To be more successful, we could use more time during CPT to plan how these notebooks could look and be most effective for our students.

We are using Science Notebooks for students to draw and label what they have observed and give them an opportunity to use new vocabulary in their drawings and writing. Students are not required to write but are given sentence starters to help further explain thinking.

We feel the way we are currently using notebooks is appropriate and beneficial for first graders. We may add in a questions I still have section to give students the opportunity to further their own investigations.
We are happy with with the notebooks as of now, we are looking forward to see how students can continue to share their learning as their literacy skills continue to develop.
