Following the invention of the electric vehicle the first drivable electric car was created in 1870. The electric car became a staple of wealth and prosperity in the following years. That was Until 1913, Henry Ford made a new car called the Model T. The demand for the new car was so high that Ford went from making 7.5 cars per hour to 146 cars per hour by using the assembly line. The new invention of the gas car dwarfed its electric-based counterpart. Electric vehicles struggled in the car industry and gas cars became the predominant car. Other improvements to gas-based cars started becoming popular in the 1920s and 30s. One of the most significant improvements to the car was the addition of the radio. The radio has now become a vehicle staple and is used in many pop culture references.  In 1956, The Interstate Highway Act helped make highways that connect the entire U.S. This was very important because it allowed cross-country travel. In 1974, airbags became a new safety standard for all cars to have. Soon after, electric vehicles came back to the car industry because gas prices rose and the effect gas cars have on the environment. In 1997, the first Toyota Prius was sold. Toyota is the best-selling car brand globally. In 2001, the first Tesla was made. The car was named after the famous inventor Nikola Tesla. This was a massive innovation because now Tesla is the best-selling electric car. One part of the problem is that gas cars produce greenhouse gasses. Gas cars use gas as their fuel. The oil gas cars use is non-renewable and will eventually be depleted. The gasoline exhaust carries Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Gas cars produce 1.4 billion tons of greenhouse gas each year. Since CO2 is a greenhouse gas the exhaust creates holes in the Ozone Layer. As a result of the Ozone layer having holes, the amount of the sun’s UV rays that reach Earth increases dramatically. The more UV rays that reach the Earth’s surface the more climate change increases. This leads to the earth getting hotter. The hotter temperatures cause habitat loss, drought, more aggressive tropical storms, and frequent wildfires. In addition, once cars eventually break down they go to scrap yards. Over 12 million cars go into scrap yards a year. The broken cars then get compacted into small squares where they are stacked and used for parts. This is very poor for the environment because many habitats are destroyed for the creation of scrap yards. The ecosystems are destroyed for a place that creates more waste. Gas cars need to be filled with fuel (Gasoline) to drive. Gasoline is very expensive due to inflation and issues with trade. Also, gasoline produces many greenhouse gasses that are harmful to the environment. Electric cars will help decrease the effects of this problem but, the cost of an electric car upfront is more expensive than a gas car. This causes people to not want to buy electric vehicles because of the more expensive upfront cost. Electric cars run on electricity that is free. In the long run, the gas car is actually more expensive than the electric car because of the cost of fuel. The gas car industry’s overall revenue is 1.53 trillion dollars and accounts for 3% of America’s gross domestic product (GDP). For these reasons, the gas car industry is an integral part of the economy. That is why it’s so hard to try and replace the gas car. In contrast, the electric car industry’s overall revenue is 246.70 billion dollars. As a result, the electric car industry is much smaller compared to the gas car industry. Gas cars exaughst harmful gases. This causes people who are around those gases for a long time like mechanics to develop respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer. Because mechanics have one of the lowest paying jobs, they might not be able to afford healthcare. Due to this the people who work in the hands on portion of the car industry might die because they can’t get the proper treatment. According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics injury and illness report, mechanics and technicians experienced 13,150 injuries and illnesses resulting in valuable time away from work. Another reason the gas car industry negatively affects people is that the industry has many positions that need to be filled. At first this seems like a good opportunity for people because it gives more job opportunities to people who don’t have one. For the reason I said earlier this may leave people with a poor paying job that can injure them. In closing, the gas car industry has many negative effects on people and can be very dangerous  working conditions because of working conditions.

Gas cars exhaust greenhouse gasses that affect the earth’s climate. This is a major issue because the increasing temperatures will cause habitat loss and will be poor for many plant species. A possible solution to this problem could be to drive a more eco-friendly car like an electric car. Another solution could be to have a plan to walk or bike for a couple of days out of the week to lessen your greenhouse gas emissions. These both would be very beneficial to the environment if everyone would try to achieve these goals. One more solution could be supporting The Climate and Clean Air Coalition. This campaign is an international group trying to slow the rate of global warming and make the air quality better. An additional challenge is that cars go to scrap yards once cars have broken down. These scrap yards are very bad for the environment because they destroy nearby habitats. A plan to fix this could be to send the broken cars to a facility that recycles the car for parts and then shreds them.
