Othello is driven by the rumor and his beliefs that Desdemona is cheating on him. He is driven by the need for revenge and punishment. His drive to get revenge on his newly wedded wife leads him to eventually killing her. When he discovers Iago had tricked him into falling for his lies and killing he wife, he eventually kills Iago, then himself. Othello's motivation to get revenge and kill his wife displays his strength in meeting his goals and retaining power, yet his weakness is his lack of self confidence and ability to trust in others. This could be due to the racism he has experienced from many, and those who doubted him once promoted to a higher rank in the military, as well as Desdemona's father, who resisted his marriage with Desdemona.

Due to her need for survival and her eventually longing to save those she loves, she turns herself in. Mariam is motivated by her love for those she cares about and her need to protect them.
