INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to identify the problems faced by students who have make a mistake by choosing the wrong major and to study why does it happen to them.

Generally, choosing a major is a choice that should be intentional and based on knowledge of our one’s self, and when the wrong choice is made, the implication can be harsh. Ideally, a major will leave a student academically successful as well as fulfill academic, personal and vocational goals. Colleges and universities administrators have begun implementing various types of institutional resources to assist undecided students when choosing a major, but all students are likely underprepared when choosing a major. This issues is a problem because the student has no self-determination in choosing the courses. Failure to make the right decision often leads to downfall. Methodologically speaking, decision-making is not all fun and games, some deal with people, others deal with future careers. Graduating high school students face one of the most crucial decisions in their lives, and that is future career decision. These students face the fact that this certain adjudication will decide their future. Deciding on which college to attend to is not a “gut reaction”. It requires mature and serious discussion, and may not, despite the long run, lead to initial choice. However, during this crucial stage in each student’s life, there are some factors in which results to confusion, and further lead to a mistake. Some parents think that what they suggest to their children in what course to pursue is better, yet they tend to ignore what their children desire. Other factors include: financial stability, university prestige and of course, practicality. And because of these, some students graduate in courses they do not really like. On the other hand, others pursue their desired course with no doubt, and they were able to graduate with highspirits. One of the suggested elucidations is for the parents to talk with their children. Then it is up to the child whether they will agree or not. Other solution involves letting the child decide on their own. Deciding for oneself helps the individual to develop and progress in life.

II. OVERVIEW

A number of academic staff members and some directors of each courses in universities are the opinion that the students who making a wrong decisions by choosing the wrong course to enter the university can give negative impact for the students. There was a case where students is unable to continue their studies and decide to exchange their current courses to the courses that they interested more. Some of students decides to stop their studies in university because of they do not performed well in their exam and this always happen to students who in the final year. Not only that, there are some cases that students change their faculty and they have to start to study all the chapters again like the first year students in courses that they choose. Even they are actually final year student in the previous faculty, they should have to start all again and become first year students back.

In additions, they changes the course because of afraid that they do not get any job if they continue with their current courses. This is not a new problem, because years by years this was develop continuously and become a serious issue.

Students always making a mistake as they actually do not get enough information about their course. Maybe before this the students are not exposed well at their school or college matriculation about the major that they will study in university.

The lack of knowledge and do not make a research about the courses that will take, can easily been affected by the people surroundings. Furthermore, they do not know what their passion are. Maybe some of them can understanding well in very contra different subject for a example some of them can learn for both mathematics and medics. So, they confuse which actually is the most suitable major for them to choose for study in university and because of that, they just pick the major randomly. Majority the students are decided to change their current courses to the other courses because of they have make wrong decision when choosing the right course during apply the online application of university. We felt it is necessary to have a better picture of the situation so that appropriate actions can be taken to help the students to face the problems. So, we decide to organize the an open day to conduct students who are considering what courses that they will choose after completing SPM (O-Levels) or STPM (A-Levels) or Matriculation and exposed them more about the courses with some interesting program.

III. PROCEDURE

The following investigative procedures were used to identify the solution for the problem and the best way to help students to choose the right courses.

A. Director of program in FST, UKM were interviewed.

B. Questionnaires were distributed to 10 randomly selected to solicit their opinion on that

    Problems.

IV. FINDINGS

A. Have you participated in the school trip to university before you enter to the university?

60% of the respondents said that they join the trip to the university before they enter to the university and another 40% never join the trip to university.

B. Do you think that the trip can help you to choose the right course? Why?

1. 80% of the respondents say that trip to university can help students to choose the right courses

2. 20% of the respondents do not agree with the trip to university because they still confused to choose the courses.

C. What activities do you think can university do to help school student know the courses better?

1. Most of the respondents suggest to make a talk to expose the courses to the school students.

2. Some of the respondents say that do friendly programmed to attract students

      D. What suitable age for students to participated the trip?

1. Half of the respondents agree that secondary school students is supposed to join the trip to university.

2. 40% agree that STPM students suppose join the trip to know the university life better.

V. CONCLUSIONS

Based on data collected, we find that many students have difficulty choosing courses. The lack of exposure on the courses of the university makes the students difficult to make choices. we propose an open day settlement to provide an opportunity for school students to understand the courses better. In conclusion, we can reduce the occurrence of change courses that occurs among students in the university.

VI. PROPOSE SOLUTION

Having a choice is great, but when it’s a big decision like choosing a major and university, then a lot of research needs to be done. So, we suggest to organize An Open Days where by organize the event it can be an invaluable part of this. An Open Day is a time when schools and colleges open for visits by prospective parents and students who are researching institutions and deciding where to apply. As part of an Open Day, visitors will receive a guided tour of the facilities and be able to form an impression about the atmosphere and ethos of an institution, which is particularly true if it is possible to see any lessons in progress. An overview will also usually be given about an institution including information such as the courses offered, the extra-curricular options available, the approach to teaching and pastoral care and an explanation of the admissions procedure

Open Days give prospective parents and students a large amount of information about a school or college. It should be possible at an Open Day to quickly absorb details about the teaching style, the atmosphere, a typical student at that institution, the results and subsequent destinations of the students, and any further details. For this reason, Open Days are very helpful in assisting the decision-making process. It is also often possible to tailor the event towards specific areas of interest, for example someone who would like to know more about academic progression might be able to meet with a Head of Careers, a Director of Studies or the Registrar. Someone more concerned about support might spend more time in conversation with the Head of SEN (Special Educational Needs) and the welfare or pastoral team.

As well as being a good way to quickly learn a lot of information about a school or college, Open Days allow parents and students to visit an institution relatively anonymously. Students who are nervous about the spotlight of a meeting with an admissions tutor to discuss more about a college will be able to absorb that same information quietly at the back of a room and can then consider their opinions about an institution and whether they would like to make an application in their own time.

VII. PROCEDURE

The following investigative procedures were used to identify the solution for the problem and the best way to help students to choose the right courses.

A. Career Counsellor at Pusat Pembangunan Karier (UKM-Karier), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia were interviewed.

VIII. FINDINGS

Based on Mr Tan Yao Xiong's interview, which is he is Career Counsellor at Pusat Pembangunan Karier (UKM-Career), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. During the interview with him, we asked his views about the issues of students who have making a mistake by choosing the major that not right fit with them.

He noted that there are many factors that causes this problem and one of them is during apply the UPU online , where there are many courses that they should have to choose. But the problem is the selection is depends by the students but the acceptance by the university itself. So, for unlucky students who do not get their choices have to accept and agreed with that result. That's why many students decide to change their current major to major that they interested more when in half semester study in university. Not only the first year involved in exchanging the major, third years student also involved wants to change their major. Most of them, had come to see the counselor to share their problems and ask the opinion about the exchanging courses. Mr. Tan Yao Xiong also stated that most of the first year students come to see him and ask his opinion is it worth it if they decide to change the major for now? Mr. Tan said, it’s okay if they are strongly belief with their ability and confident with their decision making. Counselors cannot give a decision for the students, they only play a role in helping them to decide by explaining some information that they knows and give some advice and opinions to students. Mr. Tan also will give the inventory test for them so that they will know their abilities and what major is suitable with their personality.

Mr. Tan also noted that most of the students who changed the program mostly obtained excellent results. We also told Mr. Tan that to solve this problem we would like to make an open day program to helps students. Therefore, he gave some of his opinion and suggestions to us. He noted that this program is very good and should been organize to help the students with this issues. He also give the suggestion for us to conduct inventory test first on students who wants to come the open day, so that easiest for us to divide them into a groups according to their inventory test results. When they have be divided into groups, the facilitator can bring them to the booth that related with their inventory test results. So, the students can get the specific information about the courses that relate with their inventory result form the expert at the booth and can ask anything about that. Mr. Tan also suggest us to invite the counseling to assist students to know their identifying and their personalities. This is a very important thing for students knows themself. In addition, if there are some students who still unable to know himself and does not know what he wants and what to do, the student needs to meet the counselor personally.

IX. CONCLUSION

One of the biggest problems of a particular graduating high school student is to decide on what course they will take in college. Accepting the fact that there are mere factors that affects their decisions. The factor that affects the most with regards to college course decision-making is the financial stability of the family. With this, the student finds it complicated to decide whether to go for the course that he or she desires or to go for the course that his or her family can afford.

Money is the greatest obstacle that serves as a hindrance on the path of a student. As said before, most of the students motivate themselves to take a specific course by their trust on themselves and their family members that they can really achieve it. Moreover, this trust serves as their inspiration as they build up their foundation of their future. But, most of them is lack of information about the major that have in university. This is because there are not to exposed enough about the information of the courses that have in university.

The most precise possible solution is organize an open day for SPM, STPM and Matriculation students so that they can gain more information about it and feels the environment by themselves.

X. RECOMMENDATIONS

1. We also make a collaboration with any universities that want to join us to spread the knowledge about the courses to students. This is because some universities just offer the certain courses that have in their university.

2. Invite a celebrity and educated person who is alumni from university to give a talk to students to encourage them and share their experience to the student.

3. Implementing first-year programs, summer programs, career assessments, and exploratory workshops. Moreover, using positive advising techniques and encouraging changes in campus culture would be effective.

4. Use an appreciative advising, which is asking positive, open-ended questions when helping students consider goals, passions, and interests—all

5. Changing the terminology we use about pre-major students from “undecided” to “exploratory” students or something similar would ensure a more positive connotation rather than one that implies indecisiveness.

REFERENCE

https://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergrauate/open-day/open-days

https://amp.theguardian.com/partner-zone-university-of-law/2018/mar/23/open-seasons-how-to-make-the-most-of-unversity-open-days

https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/what-and-where-study/open-days-and-events/open-days-tips

https://www.griffith.ie/blog/6-reasons-attend-college-open-day

https://afterschool.my/articles/5-reasons-students-choose-the-wrong-course

https://colegeinfogeek.com/dumd-major-choice-mistakes

https://www.affordablecollegesonine.org/college-resource-center/college-career-fairs/

https://www.oxford-royale.co.uk/articles/wrong-degree.html

https://www.hotcoursesabroad.com/study-abroad-info/applying-to-university/top-tips-to-avoid-taking-the-wrong-course/

https://www.topuniversities.com/blog/4-signs-youre-studying-wrong-subject

(A165605)

IX.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to identify the problems faced by students who have made a mistake by choosing the wrong major

II. OVERVIEW

A number of academic staff members and some directors of each course in universities are the opinion that the students who make a wrong decision by choosing the wrong course to enter the university can give a negative impact for the students. There was a case where students are unable to continue their studies and decide to exchange their current courses to the courses that they interested more. Some of the students decide to stop their studies in university because they do not perform well in their exam and this always happens to students who in the final year. Not only that, there are some cases that students change their faculty and they have to start to study all the chapters again like the first year students in courses that they choose. Even they are actually final year student in the previous faculty, they should have to start all again and become first-year students back.
In additions, they change the course because of afraid that they do not get any job if they continue with their current courses. This is not a new problem, because years by years this was developed continuously and become a serious issue.
Students always making a mistake as they actually do not get enough information about their course. Maybe before this, the students have not exposed well at their school or college matriculation about the major that they will study in university.
The lack of knowledge and do not make a research about the courses that will take, can easily be affected by the people surroundings. Furthermore, they do not know what their passion is. Maybe some of them can understand well in very contra different subject for an example some of them can learn for both mathematics and medics. So, they confuse which actually is the most suitable major for them to choose for study in university and because of that, they just pick the major randomly. A majority the students are decided to change their current courses to the other courses because they have made the wrong decision when choosing the right course during applying the online application of university. We felt it is necessary to have a better picture of the situation so that appropriate actions can be taken to help the students to face the problems. So, we decided to organize an open day to conduct students who are considering what courses that they will choose after completing SPM (O-Levels) or STPM (A-Levels) or Matriculation and exposed them more about the courses with some interesting program.

A) Make Inventory Test

- Inventory test is a type of psychological test in which a person fills out a survey or questionnaire with or without the help of an investigator. It often asking on person behavior, personality, interests, values and symptoms so that an investigator can conclude which types of person we are. According to Mr. Tan, inventory test is very important to those who have no idea to choose course program in university level by looking at your inventory test’ result. He add that almost all student who change the program are from different faculty showing that that person even don’t know what their passion are. This situation even more dangerous for those who cannot go with the previous program as many cases shows that they have no choice so they just pick any program that have no bonding with what they take before.

B) School trip

- School trip also one of the good solution to expose secondary, STPM, matriculation and foundation student in real world of university life. There are various purpose of school trip actually but that make it more worth to do so as many advantage we get from it. In the context of choosing courses, university and school need to plan a program that gives enlightenment about the dividing of any major courses that usually students know from beginning. For example is Mathematics or in other word those who interest more on calculation. In university, there a lot of calculation program such as Statistics, Science Actuary, Financing Mathematics, Business, Accounting, Banking and many more and of course the learning will be different from each other. Thus, students are early expose on list of calculation program eventually can decide better in future.

C) Research

- Looking at interview session as the example, basically we do a lot practice, searching good word to answer the questions and wearing a proper cloth. Same goes as when we in choosing program situation. Student who still don’t pursue undergraduate program should do some research and information regarding on choose they like to choose. It very important to making sure student know what they will learn, what pro and cons of that program and the job opportunity. Information can be get via internet, news, teachers or lecturer and seniors. A lot of information give a general knowledge also preparations for student after all they will choose better in course program.

D) Open days

- Open day is a must. Student can get experience to visit the university before they are officially being ans undergraduate also getting some fun beside to find out more information. There are many attractive thing student can do during that event. For example is explores. This includes a fun games which each game represent different course. Student can participant all games as well. In an addition, there will be several different talks they can attend that includes course talks, faculty, department and general admissions talks. Plus, there will be a plenty of expert who will give advice about subjects, student finance, study abroad and much more.

I. OVERVIEW

A number of academic staff members and some directors of each course in universities are the opinion that the students who make a wrong decision by choosing the wrong major to enter the university can give a negative impact for them. There was a case where students are unable to continue their studies and decide to exchange their current courses to the courses that they interested more. Some of the students decide to stop their studies in university because they do not perform well on their exam.

Not only that, there are some cases that students change their faculty and have to study all the chapters like the first year students. Besides, they change the course because afraid that they do not get any job. Year by years it was developed continuously and become a serious issue. Students make a mistake as they actually lack information about their course.

The students have not exposed well at their school or college matriculation about the major that they will study in the university.

The lack of knowledge and do not make a research about the course can easy affected by the people surroundings. Furthermore, they do not know what their passion is. Some of them can understand well in the different subject so that, they just pick the major randomly because confused which actually is the most suitable major for them to choose for study in university. A majority the students are decided to change their courses because they have made the wrong decision during applying the online application of university.

We felt it is necessary to have a better picture of the situation so that appropriate actions can be taken to help the students to face the problems. So, we decided to organize an open day to conduct students who are considering what courses that they will choose after completing SPM (O-Levels) or STPM (A-Levels) or Matriculation.
