Shape Walk Post Box

Students look at a post (cardboard) box with different shapes holes in it. They need to search the classroom to find a 3D shape that has the same shaped face that would fit through the hole.

Guided Group LSA

Predicting Movement of 3D objectsLinks to an external site. 

Students are asked to sort 3D objects into those they would predict would roll and slide. Students then send the objects down the ramp to test their prediction. Students draw and explain the results and why some shapes roll and others slide. 

Tracing Objects Links to an external site.

Students design a picture by tracing the faces of a 3D object. Students describe their image using vocabulary.  E.g.

The circle was the face of a cylinder. 

EXTENSION: 

Explain the position of the particular shapes.

Can you make a picture only using each face of a 3D object once?

Guided Group

4 Linking Cubes

Three students were each given four linking cubes. They each used their four cubes to make a different 3D object. What might the 3D object be? 

Let students use multiple linking cubes to find all the possible answers. 

How do you know you have found all the possibilities?

Can you name the 3D objects based on the number of features?

I Spy

Students play in pairs. Students pla I Spy but they cannot use the name or colour of the 3D Object they are looking at. The need to use mathematical vocabulary related to shape, measurement and location. 

3D Shape Barrier Game 

Student A makes a design using linking blocks. They describe it to student B who attempts to replicate it. Students swap roles. Students are encouraged to use mathematical language including shape attributes and positional language.

Maths - measurement using direct measures, converting measurements

Read aloud the picture book 'Actual Size' and discuss students' knowledge of other animals in the world

Using tape measures, rulers and an iPad, students explore the outdoors for representations that measure the same size as something in the picture book (length, height, diameter)

Students take photos and then annotate the measurements using the metric system converting them to different representations (mm, cm, m)

On completion, students present their findings to the class and explain their mathematical thinking
