In 2050 at UW, the full life cycle of materials is considered in every facet of university operations. Plastics and single use products have been eliminated to the fullest extent possible from every campus, program, and event. Through strategic stakeholder engagement and innovative waste industry partnerships, waste reduction and avoidance has been maximized, leading to an all-time low rate of overall waste disposal across the UW campuses and medical centers.

Goal 1: Achieve a 90% waste diversion rate by 2040 for all campuses and units, targeting an annual 2% increase beginning in 2025.

Goal 2: Use data transparency to drive community engagement by publicly disclosing key waste performance indicators annually beginning in 2026.

Goal 3: Eliminate single-use food containers, cups, and utensils from all dining facilities by 2030, and from all sporting events by 2040.
