The objective of this battle was that Japan wanted to control the Coral Sea.
What happened in this battle was that that the Japanese wanted to control the coral sea. When the Japanese army landed in the area they came under attack from the aircraft carrier planes from the American force.
Japan lost a lot of planes in this battle. Their strategy was to use many more ships but divide them in to widely spread out groups. they had no air coverage which caused them the loose to the allied team. The battle of Midway was a month later and Japan didn't have enough forces available, which caused them to loose that battle too. If they had enough forces in both these battles, the outcome of WWii would be so different.

The battle of the Coral Sea caused Americans & the United States to have lost:

1 fleet carrier sunk - large groups of ships, army on sea

1 destroyer sunk - defense

1 oiler sunk - ship that provides other ships with fuel and sometimes food, mail, ammunition and other necessities while at sea.

1 fleet carrier damaged

69 aircraft destroyed - planes or other machines that can fly.

656 killed

The Japanese casualties:

1 light carrier sunk

1 destroyer sunk

3 small warships sunk

1 fleet carrier damaged

1 destroyer damaged

1 smaller warship damaged

1 transport damaged - carries cargo

92 aircraft destroyed

966 killed

MAY 4 ( first day of the battle):

A coastwatcher reported seeing a fleeter(large groups of ships, army on sea) heading towards Tulagi. The Yorktown launched its planes to attack. They did some damage to the Japanese. The main part of the invasion fleet was sailing from Rabaul towards port Moresby.
The American commander assumed the Japanese would be protecting the edge of these transports, and started to go towards New Guinea. The main Japanese fleet thought they could catch the Americans from the rear, and entered through the Solomon islands. But they both had lost each other and were trying to find the opposing team in the big area.

This is a map of the route of Rabaul to Port Moresby:

There were no sightings of the Japanese invasion fleet until 7 May. Japanese planes found the American fuel and attacked, believing that the tanker(ship that transports liquids or gases) was a carrier. Meanwhile the American carriers, Lexington and Yorktown, launched two planes which destroyed the Shoho. This was the first time the Japanese had been beaten.
Part of the allied fleet, including the two Australian ships, were now sent towards Papua to attack the Port Moresby invasion fleet. But the Japanese had turned back because they were too vulnerable without Shoho.
Attacking could only be carried out efectively during day time. The Japanese took a big gamble with this and sent out their planes at late afternoon. This was risky because if they did find the enemy, it would be easy to destroy. But if they did not find the enemy ships, they would have to land back on their own carriers at night which was a difficult and dangerous move. Only eighteen out of twenty-seven planed made it back.

A large part was because the Japanese had no naval knowledge. They also underestimated the strength and forces of the US and Australia.
The Japanese also made tactical mistakes. They wasted time attacking the tanker, which was an unimportant target. They also made a bad move by searching for their targets during late afternoon. It just resulted in them loosing their own air crew.

       Technology:

he Americans had an advantage because they could intercept and decode the Japanese’s secret signals.

These are the main reason why the Allied team won this battle.

This was the first time the Allies had stopped the Japanese forces. It was a turning point in the battle because this caused the Japanese to loose many forces, weapons, soldiers, supplies e.t.c.
