It is so important for educators to stay in the know on appropriate teaching models/frameworks. It is also important that we understand effectiveness of technology. Just using random technological technology is not effective in instruction without it being intentional.

The quote is referring to the vast and ever-growing amount of technology that is available for people to use, not just in the classroom but in futures as adults. There are so many tools, apps, devices, etc. with more being invented every day. I buy a new phone, and the next month a new model comes out that has better and more improved technology. The advancements in technology can be used to enhance our instruction and facilitate students' learning. However, teachers have to be mindful of how the technology is being used. It is easy to use these technology advancements as replacements for current tools in the classroom (using the Smartboard as a glorified overhead projector or Google Classroom as a worksheet distributor). There have been studies about how teachers use technology (through Apple). A classroom equipped with all the modern technology will not necessarily become a fully-integrated technology infused learning environment. Technology is new and scary, to be honest. Teachers must be trained how to use technology and how to TEACH the technology and how to teach WITH the technology. In-service training and mentorship by experts are necessary to help the vast amount of technology to be used effectively.

It is the educator's mission to find the richest manner in which to promote and grow that knowledge. Students cannot grow in their passion for learning if it is not passed on by the educator. An example of this quote coming to life in Wilkes County Schools is the use of Chromebooks. Just because we have the Chromebooks doesn't mean they are being used effectively. A lot of people are just using them as substitutes for notebooks and so much more could be created if they were used with the TPACK theory in mind.

We have the opportunity to enrich our teaching with the technology that is available. The problem is which ones are best, how do we know? Just because we are using technology does not mean we are using it to its fullest potential. This one of the reasons i think we have changed to digital learning credits. We need to keep up with what is out there, how to use it if needed and the new research in these areas.

I believe that the point Mrs. Tomlinson was making is that we currently live in technology enriched culture. We have so many options and choices at our finger tips daily. At times it can be overwhelming when one is trying to decide which digital tool is the best and most appropriate for the task that is being planned for their students.

This quote is referencing how educators commonly incorporating technology within their instruction, typically as a replacement or not even incorporating technology at all. Educators understanding what and how technology is used, having the intent to benefit student learning, but often do not execute this intent. I think this is because teachers are fixated to much on quantity of technology rather than quality of technology. Not all technology benefits all learners. There needs to be differentiation amongst technology, just as we do for instruction. It is easy to get caught up in the abundance of technology, but I feel this quote is not referring to the quantity of technology. Instead using the term “riches” as the benefits from the opportunities technology provides in strengthening the depth of student understanding. I think back to the quote, “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” I think this goes right in with how educators incorporate technology, simply delivering instruction, rather than teaching students to expand their understanding and how they demonstrate their understanding within the classroom and beyond.

We can sometimes be overwhelmed by the idea of using multiple websites and applications in our teaching, but in the end, if we have the resources they should be used. Using technology in the classroom is great, but it must be used effectively. Simply putting students on computers to "play a game" is not effective use of time or technology. Technology should be used to let the students thinking critically and problem solve.

Melanie Yarboro- I think this quote means that there are endless possibilities with technology, but that we must first understand how to use the technology in itself, so that we can then use it as a means to teach and learn with. Especially as teachers, it can feel time consuming to learn how to use a new technology ourselves, then be able to teach it to our students effectively enough that it can be used as a tool for students to learn with.

I think she is saying that there are so many opportunities to enrich learning through technology but we simply have to learn about them or be made aware of them so we can enlist the help of them in our classrooms. Often times, people talk about how much technology is out there, but it is difficult to understand what it is/how to use it without being properly taught.
In our county we are fortunate enough to have a lot of technology (ie: laptops) available for student use. I understand that the goal is now to eventually have 1-1 devices in elementary schools as well. However, just simply HAVING the technology is not enough anymore. You cannot provide a student with a laptop and a website and call it "technology enhanced instruction." You have to model and teach students how to apply skills/apps/websites/tasks in order to truly enhance instruction.
These quotes go hand in hand because I believe Tomlinson is saying, there are so many ways (beyond simply handing a student a computer or tablet) that technology can enrich instruction.

It connects to idea of just because there is hardware available, effective instruction won't naturally follow because some teachers are not going to seek out an unfamiliar way of doing things without some instruction on how to do it. I believe once we are trained on how to use something you are still going to have those who are stuck in their ways, however for the most part, we grow. This requires teachers to get out of their comfort zone and learn new ways to role out lessons that promotes student ownership and innovation.

With technology, our students literally have the world at their fingertips, but we limit their scope so greatly, they never have the opportunity to see it. Our (teachers) lack of authentic technology integration limits the world students have access to and what they learn to do with it. If we learn how to embrace technology and what its true capacity is, we would invigorate our teaching and students' learning experiences. We are "missing the boat" when the scope of our technology integration is restricted to websites and videos. While those are valid uses of technology, that should not be the entirety.

Students can easily use the internet for projects, but one goal that teachers need to make sure they reflect on is did the student actually learn and apply from using technology. Unfortunately, these opportunities are not used. I think there are various reasons for this. It could be that many teachers are not comfortable or knowledgeable with integrating tech into their lessons. Another reason could be that although the technology is available, the training for using the tech adequately is not available. I think teachers are very overwhelmed and the thought of taking on something new is somewhat scary.

I know there are things that I could do differently within my classroom and present things in new and exciting ways with technology, however sometimes I might know about these yet, or the time to learn them to apply to my instruction is not always made available within our instructional day. To be honest, technology is not my forte and I sometimes put off using some things because I am not sure what to do if problems pop up or if students need more assistance than what I can provide. This does mean this is a right choice but with the demands of day to day teaching, this is often times our reality. Teachers need training opportunities to become adept facilitators of this ever- changing technology. This is a critical piece in student learning.

One to Grow On...

"There's an embarrassment of riches in opportunities to enliven teaching and learning through technology". By Carol Ann Tomlinson

My interpretation of the quote:

“Embarrassment of riches” is usually defined as “an unbelievable amount” or “more than any one person/group/country should have or need.” In this case, an abundance of “opportunities” (“ways”) to “enliven” (“to make exciting, relatable, interesting, personalize, usable, engaging and fun”) “teaching and learning” (“the educational process”) “through technology” (“by using technology).

What do I think she means by this?

There are unbelievable amount ways that technology can be used to make the educational process exciting, relatable, interesting, personalize, usable, engaging and fun.

Connecting “just because hardware is…available, effective technology…instruction won't naturally follow”.

Just because there are so many options of technology to select from, does not mean that educators know how find technological options, how to use the technology effectually or how use the technology in a multiple of ways. In addition, educators may not have the skills to teach/demonstrate the new technology that they find. For example, I know a few dances (some technology). I know there are many more dances (types of technology) that exist, but I have not been exposed to them, so I can't dance them (use the technology). To further that analogy, just because I can do the dance (use a technology), it does not mean that I have the skill to break down the dance (technology) down to teach others!

Laura Chagnon
