Besides trade and the way the colonists were governed they practically were left to manage themselves.

Proclamation of 1763: The King issued the proclamation that prohibited settlements from being made beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Settlers who already lived beyond the Mountains were forced to move back.
The colonists were not happy with the King.
The Boston Massacre: While being harassed by a mob, Britain Soldiers Shot into the crowd and killed 3 colonists.
Taxes: After the War Britain needed money to pay off all its debts, the King believed he had the right to tax the colonies. Britain then proceeded to require the colonies to pay taxes, to pay for Britain's War.
The Stamp Act: This act taxed any legal document like newspapers and playing cards. It was taxed by requiring the use of a specific paper with an embossed revenue stamp.
Townsend Act: This act made colonists pay taxes on imported goods like paint, paper, and tea.
Taxation Without Representation: The colonists believed they shouldn't have to pay all these taxes because they were made and passed in Britain by the parliament and not by their own colonial government.

This led the colonists to start distancing themselves from Britain.
The Colonist's Response: The colonists began to boycott Britain by not buying their imported goods, and eventually, they started planning a rebellion.
The Boston Tea Party: A group of Colonists who had dressed up as Native Americans dumped the imported tea into the Boston harbor.
Britain's Response: After the colonist's misbehavior, the king believed that they were forgetting who is in charge. The king began to things like closing the Boston harbor and took away any governmental power the colonists had, additionally the British military started getting into more and more confrontations with the colonists. The declarations also explained all of the hardships the king had placed on the colonies and how they tried to provide alternatives but they were all ignored.
