Early Life

Jefferson Davis was born on June 3rd 1808 into a family with plantations. He was the tenth and last child of his family. He was in a school with all boys for three years, and then entered the Transylvania Collage of Lexington Kentucky at the age of 13. He spent four years in Military Academy and later served as a lieutenant in the Wisconsin Territory. His colonels daughter, Sarah Taylor, became Davis's wife. Three months after he resigned his commission they became planters and Sarah Taylor died of malaria fever. Davis shut out the whole world for 7 years after his wife passed away. In 1845-1846 he was elected to the House of Representatives and later married Varina Howell. After he resigned his position, he served in the Mexican-American war and then became a worldwide hero after he won the Battle of Buena Vista. After the war he became a part of the Senate and later became chairman of Military Affairs Committee. Later, Franklin Pierce made him secretary of war in 1853 and was very successful. He enlarged the army, and strengthened costal defense. He left office in 1857, supported John C. Breckenridge and joined the Southern Democrats.

Jefferson's time as leader and President of the Confederacy

Davis was a spokesman of the south and believed that that slavery should be legal in all nations. He also demanded the Congress to protect slavery. He hoped to become head of the Army of the Confederate States but then Alabama chose Davis as president of Confederacy when he was at the Confederate Convention. During his time as the president of Confederacy, he built factories and had several problems. He sent a peace commission to Washington to prevent conflicts. When the American Civil War started he built a new nation and was determined to carry on the war. He chose Robert E. Lee as the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. He formed a strong central government and was very popular but then soon fell out of popularity as the government experienced problems. He started his presidency in 1861 and ended in 1865.

Jefferson Davis's Family

In 1835 when Davis was 27 he married the daughter of his commander Sarah Taylor. Zachary Taylor, Davis's father-in-law, became president of the United States until his death. In 1850 Davis and his wife moved to Mississippi but three months later they both became sick, and Sarah Taylor sadly passed away. Davis still managed to make a lot of money off of the plantations and became very wealthy. After several years of trying to regain his strength after losing his wife, he married his second wife Varina Howell. They had six kids and one of his daughters, Winnie, became known as the Daughter of Confederacy. His bloodline still runs strong and has a great great grandson who is still alive at age 72 and he has kids and grandkids.

Jefferson's Imprisonment and Later Life

In 1865 Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia. He was a prisoner for two years for treason and then in 1867 he was released. He went to a treason trial to defend himself. The case was dropped near the end of 1868. After his imprisonment he spent a few years traveling and trying to regain his strength. For a few years he served as the president for an insurance company and retired in 1877. He wrote and published the book Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government which was a book dedicated to his critics. Davis went to Confederate reunions and won admiration from Southerners. Ulric Dahlgren, a military personnel tried to kill or capture Davis and set the burn down the capital, but he did not succeed. He sadly died in 1889 at the age of 81 in New Orleans from a bronchial sickness. He had one of the greatest funerals in the south. In 1893, years after he passed away he was permanently buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
