  • Atticus has gone out for the evening and the kids sneak out to see where he’s gone. As they’re taking a shortcut across the town square they see four cars drive in and stop by the jail.
  • Atticus notices them and puts down the newspaper he was reading. He doesn’t seem surprised to see them.
  • “He in there, Mr. Finch?” a man said.
  • “He is,” we heard Atticus answer, “and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up.”
  • “You know what we want,” another man said. “Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch.”
  • “You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” Atticus said pleasantly. 
  • Atticus suggests that the sheriff is around, but the men 
    reveal that they have sent him off on a wild goose chase.
Scout doesn’t want to miss whatever is going on, so she 
runs into the mob of people.
