Emily Dickinson was born in 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. She died in 1886 due to high blood pressure. In 1865 Dickinson was believed to have written "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass." The poem uses the snake as a way to show fear and shows that fear is also comfort by calling the snake fellow. In "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass," has lots of structure. It has 6 quatrains to make 24 lines, it's in free verse, and it is an iambic trimester. The snake, which represents the hidden powers and beauty of the natural world and evokes both awe and trepidation, is vividly pictured in Dickinson's poem.

D.H. Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, United Kingdom. He died in 1930 due to tuberculosis. Lawrence wrote the poem "Snake" in 1930. "Snake" was written to show the psychological course through their meeting. It also represented the working class versus the upper classes. The snake came and took from the man, and the man stood there letting it happen. When the snake turned, the man threw a log at it and tried to kill it like people did when they were treated unkindly. The structure of "Snake" makes it kind of look like a snake, has 13 stanzas with no set length, and is in free verse. The poet personifies the snake using a simile, comparing it to cattle and a king in the twelfth stanza. Using a comparison, the poet personifies the snake in the twelfth stanza by comparing it to a monarch and livestock. The poet's initial terror of the snake and the voices in his brain telling him to kill it create an ambiguous tone for the poem.

In the poem, Mary Oliver uses the poem to show how precious life can be. The snake was found in the middle of the road, hit by a truck, showing how fast life can end. The man stopped and took the snake off the road and onto the side, showing how respectful people can be with life. "The Black Snake" uses 6 quatrains, is told in first person, and is free verse.
