Public Commentary

Attn : Public Affairs

The Government Publication Association

Jl. Medan Merdeka Sel. No.11, RT.11/RW.2, Gambir, Kecamatan Gambir, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10110

RE : Commenting on the shift from library to e-book

I would like to comment on the consideration of replacing public libraries with e-books. It is indeed a matter of fact that billions of people in this world are living in the technological era. However, I think that fully substituting the public library with e-books isn’t applicable for now. Our world has just risen up from the pandemic situation due to COVID-19. As a glimpse flashback, many people were jobless during that time because of the economical crisis, and yet until these days, we haven’t fully recovered from those things.

Our major concern is about those who work in the library. Imagine that they will become jobless because of the shift from the public library to e-books, people will no longer go to the library, and it has a probability that it will turn into a spooky and lonely place. In this 4.0 era, it is tough to seek jobs, shifting the mechanism that already exists will just exacerbate the situation instead. I genuinely agree that e-book is more convenient by any chance.

However, we’re not ready for it. The librarians are not prepared to lose their job. Isn’t it very sad that those public libraries will be shut down? Also, it is just very irrational for the government to allocate most of the money to buy an iPad rather than prioritizing other sectors such as building public services, fixing infrastructures, etc.

Another concern is with book rules that are new or have been around for years. We know that the knowledge base generated from many previous studies is in the form of print media, which may now exist in digital form. If the condition of physical books is not maintained in the absence of a physical library, we will lose the existing knowledge. We will lose track of the knowledge, history, and original value of science. If all these possibilities happen how the next generation will know the truth of science, while the use of digital media has great potential for data sabotage.

Taking many things into account, it would be better if the library did not need to be closed to maintain the many books that had already been made in print media, because we have to maintain the originality of the existing physical books for the development of science. For the use of an e-reader on a tablet, it should be optional by using a personal tablet without having to be funded by the government considering that the funds needed to fund the community for distributing tablets will cost a large amount of money.

Sincerely,

Amulia Ninda.

The majority of the advantages for studying abroad, in fact, are worth it for the students. Those who had a high-spirit to get more budgets for their future could try to study abroad because twenty-five percent of students who study abroad receive higher salaries.

Personally I do agree with studying abroad at least, for the graduate degree program. Unlike peoples’ opposing reasons for this, studying abroad is a clear and beneficial target to follow and to enforce.

Moreover, I am curious about why people are against the study abroad program. What is the reason? “It’s Not Safe!” Really? Have you ever seen people suffering after studying abroad? or maybe because it’s “Costly!” Well, of course it is more expensive than the local university. It costs a lot of money because of the tuition, housing, textbooks, transportations, and meals that have higher prices than local. but nowadays there are many scholarship programs to study abroad. There are many values that we can only get from studying abroad. We would cease to believe that the world contains people with a wide variety of opinions, costumes, beliefs, and ethics. We certainly can’t understand those values from studying at a domestic university.

Additionally, I would like to point out that Studying abroad will have long-lasting, positive implications on a student’s future as an academic and a professional. I would like to give some opinion about your publication. As you say, that Marijuana is useful especially in the medical field. I also just found out that a lot of people have been helped by using Marijuana.

Even though Marijuana has many benefits, we also have to consider the impact of using the Marijuana. It might be good to reduce stress, etc. However, you can not underestimate the doctor who studied about it for so long who's already studied about it deeply. They probably know that Marijuana is useful for medical conditions. Nevertheless, it gives so many bad impacts that you don’t know.

Yes, it might not be as harmful as alcohol, but we can reflect on another long-term impact which you didn’t mention in your essay. For example, Marijuana can cause brain development disorders, causing a person to lose the ability to learn, and lower IQ significantly. If Marijuana used in the long term, in this case treatment may also have a negative impact on patients

Personally, I agree with you that the use of medicine can be expanded and extended for those who are needed, unless the research of the use of it is provided and maintained well so that people take it as a medicine and not overdose it.

Additionally, I would like to point out that making a new regulation of the use of Marijuana is not as easy as you think. Since it’s a controversial and highly risky thing to do, you can just make a campaign and educatie people on how to use it properly. Then it will be limited to particular people who really need it, not for those who're only looking for the side effect.

Sincerely,

Asih Bibina Laksmi Aprila Pramudya

The Marijuana: Kill or Heal?

Editorial Board

September 19, 2022

Marijuana has been broadly used since a long time ago. This plant is believed has some benefits regarding human health. It can also reduce anxiety and depression, therefore doctors often use marijuana to help with the medical treatment. Many evidence and experience seems enough to prove that Marijuana are not as negative as people think.

However, this plant also has a negative effect regarding long term medical conditions. Let’s take young person as an example. Youth is a time when our bodies are actively working and growing, and also our brain performs many functions during this time. Facts prove that marijuana use in youth can cause brain development issues. One brain imagining study (retrieved from https://www.snexplores.org/article/cannabis-may-alter-a-teens-developing-brain) found irregularities in the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain involved in decision-making, among teens that smoked pot. While this area of the brain naturally thins with age, the study showed this area was thinner in teens that smoked weed and could have a lasting impact as they become adults. Though not as harmful as tobacco or alcohol as stated before at the argumentative text, the cannabis flower and stem do contain carcinogens, which combined with heat and smoke can damage the fragile tissue of the airways in the lungs (retrieved from DOI: 10.1513/AnnalsATS.201212-127FR).

Above all positive statements about Marijuana use, in some countries, the law regarding marijuana says the contradict statement. This raises a question, why was marijuana ever illegal? As it turns out, the root cause of why marijuana is legal in some countries is racism towards Mexicans. In accordance with the encyclopedia Britannica, at the beginning,

Mexicans had a culture of smoking marijuana. When they came to the United States of America, the people should struggle with the discrimimation action towards them. American claimed that the majority of marijuana users were minorities, including African Americans, and that marijuana had a negative impact on these "degenerate races," such as causing violence or insanity. "Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men," he added. Perhaps more concerning to Anslinger was marijuana's alleged threat to white women's virtue. He believed that smoking marijuana would lead to them having sex with black men.

It was declared unconstitutional in 1969 and was replaced the following year by the Controlled Substances Act. That legislation designated marijuana, as well as heroin and LSD, as Schedule I drugs. In most countries, the legal law about marijuana says those statements. In my point of view, the use of marijuana should still be illegal, as a preventive action towards the negative effect of marijuana. Because people’s decisions are not in our control. They may use the marijuana as they like.

Preventing infection from occuring in the first place and making a new plan to prevent malaria, in my opinion will be more effective. Preventing infection will reduce people dying because of malaria rather than improve access to malaria treatment. Reducing people dying because of malaria will help Sub-Saharan African countries economically because there are many working people.

I also agree that they must change plans to prevent malaria based on their country's conditions. WHO’s Global Malaria Eradication Programme was successful in Brazil and the United States because they have enough money. On the other hand, in Africa they don’t have enough money so this program failed because it was not in accordance with the conditions of the country. Therefore, it is necessary to have a new plan or strategy that has cheaper funds, namely ITNs. Cendrawasih No.4, Tanjungsari, Ngesrep, Kec. Ngemplak, Kabupaten Boyolali, Jawa Tengah 57375 right now. I want to deliver my public comment about drug consumption to the government. you want to contact me, you can send an email to asihbibinalaksmiaprilapramudya15@gmail.com.

I would like to give a comment about the regulation which prohibits drugs from becoming medicine in order to avoid the overdose consumption which can lead to patient dependency. I know, this regulation has the purpose of protecting the people inside the country to keep them safe and always aware of their surroundings. However, it decreases the performance of medical work. Because of the limitations for drug use, there are also a lot of people who are suffering and waiting to be healed.

The inhibition of Marijuana also become the most problem that always debated by a lot of people because I know that Marijuana is a dangerous hallucinogen which can makes the consumer increasing their imaginary emotion which can lead to over happy feelings and it’s can makes the consumer cannot control themselves and the consumer also become addictive towards the effect that caused by the Marijuana. This is why Marijuana is banned by the government. Then problems about the restriction of drugs in medical needs are overcome and become the hottest issue which is always debated by a lot of people that agree or disagree with the new regulation.

I’ve been analyzing a lot about these problems and right now, in my self opinion, I think that the regulation from the government should be replaced by other appropriate regulations. This is very important because in medical work the use of marijuana is to maintain the users emotion in stability status. Although if there are some patients that become addicted to this substance, the doctor can prevent it by slowly decreasing the amount of dosage which is accepted by the patient.

So in conclusion, The government should change the regulation that makes it difficult for the medical to carry out treatment, especially in the mental health of the patient. Then about the abuses of Marijuana it self can be reduce by give a socialization about the danger of marijuana to all of people in the country so it can bring an understanding about the effects of marijuana to our health and decreasing the abuses of marijuana cases

Sincerely,

Asih Bibina Laksmi Aprila Pramudya

As you can see, every year nearly half a million people die from the malaria disease that is rampant in Sub-Saharan Africa, many of whom are children under the age of five.

I understand that there are many programs used by the government to treat or treat someone who is infected with malaria. Fact, the main program was WHO's Global Malaria Eradication Program which has been implemented since 1955. The program has a noble goal to eliminate malaria in Africa within the next ten years. Based on previous successful programs in Brazil and the US, this program focuses on vector control. This includes distributing chloroquine widely and spraying large amounts of DDT. This makes spending from the state reduced a lot to implement the program. But it stopped in 1969, WHO acknowledged that as long as the program was active, it increased more than 10% of people contracted malaria while the program was implemented.

The programs that are run above are things to help people who are infected with malaria so that someone can recover from malaria and I and the community all know about it. But in my opinion, the best way to reduce the death rate from malaria is to focus on how to prevent infection from occurring rather than waiting to treat someone who has contracted this disease.

To prevent malaria infection from occurring and reduce the death rate from malaria, I suggest applying insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs). This method is the cheapest and most effective way to prevent malaria. Implementing this can stop mosquitoes from biting people through mosquito nets, and mosquito nets help reduce mosquito populations in a community, thus helping people who don't even have mosquito nets. It can be said to be effective because mosquitoes usually like to bite at night when everyone is asleep, so mosquito nets can reduce the number of transmissions at night. It is estimated that implementing this method can reduce 90% of malaria transmission in areas that use ITNs a lot. Then the funds spent to run this program are much cheaper and more durable. Then there are studies that say that for every 100-1000 mosquito nets used, one child who dies of malaria is reduced. So it can be estimated that if 300 million people in Africa are protected by mosquito nets, there is the potential to save three million lives by spending just a few dollars per person. Reducing the number of people infected with malaria can improve several aspects of the social field.

Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Muhammad Apfa Minca

In this text, it's more considered the negativity of libraries that will change to tabloid things. In the text, it's mentioned that it not only brings negativity to our healthy body, but also to our society. This makes us more open about the importance of libraries to the society that we have formed through libraries.

Personally, I like the library just the way they are. For me, reading a book on the tablet will break my focus!! Also if we stare too much at the tablet, It can make our eyes’ health decline, however, there are several factors that affect this such as the brightness from the tablet itself and the eyes distance from the tablet used.

Furthermore, It will be better to have a library and also a book on the tablet too. As, in text, the library is included in something that is difficult to replace. I would agree more if this tablet is made for people who want to read books but are more comfortable reading wherever they are as long as they are enjoying their free time. In retrospect with Covid-19 which has not subsided, I believe this can be used as a solution for temporarily closing the library, but it is not recommended for the library to close and be replaced by tabloids completely.

Therefore, I'm in agreement with the statement in the argumentative text by including the data that shows the percentage of many people who are focused and the percentage of understanding what they read with two different media.

Additionally, the library is good for the health and human relations that we do there. Reading in a different atmosphere, with a calm situation will increase the probability of understanding the content of the text read by the reader.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah

Students who ever studied abroad will find it easier to get a job even though some of the human resource departments in some companies will see study abroad as an experience and also increase social skills.

Also I want to add my opinion to this article. Studying abroad also helps students to master more languages. Some students who study abroad told me that when they live in another country they have to learn their languages and it helps them to master the languages even though some of them now are the native speakers.

I’m pretty sure that many students can have a bright future, but if they want to study abroad they would think about their cost of living. Not all of the parents' students are rich. Not all of the students may have time to do a part time job. I would like to give input to the government to provide many scholarships for study abroad. So, the students who need money to study abroad may fulfill this scholarship.

                Sincerely,..

Gani Wikan

Books or tablets? Let's discuss

Introduction
Editorial board
September 19, 2022

What would you prefer if you were given an option to read your favorite book? Between tablets or library books, some people have their own answer depending on their personal preference. However, if we assess it based on the benefit and impact, one will sound better than the other, or even a debate can occur. But first of all, we should see what makes us want to read books in the first place. It is a way for us to get a new knowledge, or just experiencing the pleasure of reading itself.

Tablets or e-book are indeed give us a better utility in terms of spaces, flexibility in technology, etc. One tablet can consist of several e-book, a feature of light adjustment, and many other aspects that seem to be an upgrade of the physical book. But regarding the experience, it’s telling us a different fact. A study done on tablet vs book reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Not only based on reading performa, there is also a community aspect behind the use of physical books, and that is the existence of libraries. It is a form of institution, community that tends to be non-profit. As a citizen of our community, and as a reader in any kind of book we read, we need to reconsider the good and bad between these two options. It is time for us to see it not only based on personal preference, but also the likelihood of one of these methods to impact our community.

Although to enjoy library books we have to travel to the library to get the book and with tablets we can just read it in our home. However, the existence of libraries is more than just lending books, it can bring the community closer as it is used by many age groups from toddler to senior citizen. It can also give you a quiet study space to not get distracted. Libraries are still important and have a major impact on the community.
