원룸(one room) 방 한 개로 이루어진 거주공간을 말할 때 one room이라는 단어를 콩글리시로 많이 씀. 하지만 외국인들은 ‘방 한 개’라는 의미로만 알아듣는다.

studio apartment 스튜디오 아파트라는 뜻으로, 원룸을 뜻한다. ex)Can you find me a good studio apartment near here?

   

드라마(drama) drama라는 단어에는 극, 연극, 극적인 사건이나 상황이라는 많은 뜻이 있음. 이런 여러 가지 뜻이 모여 한국에서는 TV에서 나오는 대본을 바탕으로 연기자들이 연기한 프로그램 시리즈를 뜻하는 말이 됨. 하지만 영어에서는 이 TV 드라마를 뜻하지 않음.

TV series 드라마를 뜻하는 올바른 영어 단어이다. ex)I love this TV series.

   

핸드폰(hand phone) 손에 쥐고 사용하는 전화라서 hand phone이라고 부른다. 하지만 외국인들이 듣는다면 생소한 단어일 것이다.

cell phone, mobile phone, phone ex)I am going to buy a new cell phone tomorrow.

화이트(white) 볼펜 같은 도구로 쓴 지우개로 지워지지 않는 잉크 위에 하얀색 테이프나 액체를 덮어씌워 가리는 학용품, 사무용품을 흰색을 뜻하는 ‘White’를 이용해 부름. 하지만 영어를 사용하는 원어민이 듣는다면 ‘흰색’이라고밖에 알아듣지 못할 것이다.

Whiteout, correction pen 수정테이프면 whiteout, 수정액이면 correction pen이라고 한다. ex)May I use your correction pen?

ex) install an air conditioner

리모컨 – 원래는 remote control이 맞는 표현임. remote라고 줄여 쓰기도 함.

ex) Give me the remote.

미니 앨범 – 원래는 extended play. 인도네시아는 album mini라고 한다.

ex) Team B extended their extended play. 

핸들 – steering wheel이 맞는 표현이다. handle은 행동을 칭하는 말.

ex) Every car has a steering wheel.

피규어 – 일본을 통해 들어온 말. 피겨라고 하는 것이 옳다. 
ex) How delicate this figure is!

3. consent(콘센트)---->outlet/socket
   '벽면 등에 설치한 플러그를 꽂는 곳'을 뜻하는 일본식 영어 "콘센토(concentric pluc)"를 그대로 사용했다.
   She could not find an elcetrical outlet.
  실제로는 outlet보다는 plug in이나 unplug를 많이 사용한다고 함

4. macgyver knife(맥가이버 칼)---->Swiss Army knife
   미국 드라마 "맥가이버"에서 주인공이 이 칼(Swiss Army knife)를 활용하여 사건을 해결한 데서 사용하기 시작함.
The world's first Swiss Army knife has been released.

5. ball pen(볼펜)---> ball point pen
That's my ball poin pen.
