         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Chromosome- Single, circular DNA molecule that contains most of the cell's genetic information.&nbsp;<br>2. Chromatin- the material of which the chromosomes of organisms other than bacteria (i.e., eukaryotes) are composed. It consists of protein, RNA, and DNA.<br>3. Centromere- the region of a chromosome to which the microtubules of the spindle attach, via the kinetochore, during cell division.<br>4. Spindle-a fanlike microtubule structure that helps separate the chromatids<br>5. Mitosis-The division of the cell nucleus. Its four phases are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.<br>6. Cell differentiation- process where cells become differentiated and specialized<br>7. Centrioles- tiny structures located in the cytoplasm of animal cells that help organize the spindle<br>8.Coils/supercoils- make up chromosomes in DNA<br>9.Stem cells- unspecialized cells from which differentiated cells develop.&nbsp;<br>10.Cell division- the process by which a cell divides into 2 new daughter cells.</div>]]></description>

The process of turning genes on and off is known as gene regulation. Gene regulation is an important part of normal development for the cell.  </div>]]></description>

What happens during each phase of mitosis?<br>Prophase - duplicated chromosomes, the centrioles move to opposite sides of the nucleus, spindles are formed and DNA strands attach at their centromere, nuclear envelope breaks down<br>Metaphase - Centromeres line up across the middle of the cell, spindle fibers connect each centromere to the end of a spindle<br>Anaphase -Centromeres are pulled apart, the chromosomes separate into two groups near the poles of the spindle<br>Telophase -Nucleus becomes visible in daughter cell<br>2. Do newly produced daughter cells from cell division have a higher or lower surface area-to-volume ratio compared to their parent cell? - Higher because they are smaller.&nbsp;<br>3. What is the end result of cell division for each daughter cell produced? The same amount of chromosomes as the original parent cell, but with a higher surface area to volume ratio; Allows an organism to repair and maintain its body<br>4. What happens during each phase of the cell cycle?<br>G1 - Cells increase in size and synthesize new proteins and organelles.&nbsp;<br>S - New DNA is synthesized when the chromosomes are replicated.<br>G2 - Many of the organelles and molecules required for cell division are produced.<br>M - Cell division occurs.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
