The researcher is looking into this topic by examining the way of the owner of Carlo’s Bakery, Buddy Valastro in having conversation and interaction with his employees and also the customers.

Looking into the interaction that occur between Buddy and his employees and customers, it can be said that Buddy usually imposes the positive face while communicating with his customers, as he wants to save his own face and reputation. Meanwhile, he uses the negative face while communicating with his employees, as he imposes more power difference as the employer.

Based on Brown and Levinson Politeness Model (1987), Buddy is using more of negative politeness and bald on record when communicating with his employees, meanwhile when communicating or interacting with the customers, he is more towards in using the positive politeness. These politeness strategies used is being influenced by difference in power and social distance shown when Buddy is interacting with his employees and customers.

Thus, this paper is intended to identify the face threatening act (FTA) that are portrayed by Buddy at the workplace. Besides that, it is to find out the type of politeness strategies that Buddy is using at the workplace. This paper also intended to determine the factors that lead Buddy to impose certain type of face threatening act (FTA) and politeness strategies towards his employees and customers.
