The individual aspect of these assessments really can show a lot about a student and their abilities. I think it would be very difficult to do this at a higher level because of the amount of time it would take. I do think that it could be very beneficial for a 6th grade level though if the time was available.

Reading assessments can help drive your instruction and give you a good idea of where your student is at. You can then use this feedback to help create a game plan to where your student is. The drawback is that some students will take more time and unfortunately, there isn't a ton of time.

The only drawback is that it uses a lot of valuable class time. On a positive note, there are a variety of different assessments the teacher may choose to best suits their needs.

Reading assessment can be difficult because you are assessing multiple pieces. You have to assess their fluency, which can effect their comprehension score. Some students might have bad fluency, but good comprehension, so then you might need to assess their listening comprehension. This can be time consuming and confusing if you are not use to doing it.

Reading assessment is important to instruction and guides our day-to-day teaching. It's tricky to balance because the assessments can be timely, depending on the student and the assessment task. However, taking the time to assess students' reading is worth the time taken because it can give you a very clear picture of whether a student is at the independent, instructional, or frustration level.

Bart Northrup ... one observation I have about reading assessments is that they should be reliable and valid, though we as educators must be conscious when to deliver formative versus summative assessments. Too many summative assessments can overwhelm students, so using a variety of formative assessments seems like a better choice.
