The theory of Evolution is the belief that the "Changes in the characteristics of a species over several generations relies on the process of natural selection. The theory... is based on the idea that all species are related and gradually change over time."(What is Evolution) Natural Selection is described as the way a living organism adapts and changes to better survive in its environment. Natural Selection is then directly related to an organisms mutation, or the general change is the genetic make-up of an organism passed down through offspring. Additional beliefs affecting the inheritance of genetics are sexual selection: where organisms choose to mate with another organism because of specific traits, and genetic drift: which is the random change in allele frequencies that occurs in small populations. Genetic Drift then further branches into two groups, the first being the Founder affect. The Founder Affect is the genetic change that may occur because of migration or isolation of a certain population, and the second being the Bottle Neck Affect, where the original population undergoes a devastating population reduction by natural disaster. The theory is further described and broken down into phylogenetic trees.

The branches of the trees are based on the homologous structures, similarity of the organisms, and how they are all linked to a common ancestor. The ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, which is the structured similarity in the embryonic development also relates to the phylogenetic trees and the branches.

V.I.S.T
V- Variation/mutation
I- Inheritance/DNA and sexual selection
S- Selection/founder and bottleneck
T- Time/migration, gene flow

More beliefs in the Theory of Evolution conclude that even though some organisms evolve they still have parts left on their body that are now useless, and seem have no specific beneficial function. These are called vestigial organs, an example of these in humans may include the appendix and wisdom teeth, which have no apparent function in the body.

The Australopithecus Afarensis Fossil also known as "Lucy" was found in Dikika Ethiopia, Africa in 1974 . This fossil was labled as a bipedial organism because of the slightly different structure and shape in the pelvis and a fossilized foot print found 1,000 miles away in Lanolin, Tanzania. (Genetics vs. Genomics) Being bipedial is the condition of being two footed or using two feet for standing and walking. This skeleton was falsely believed to be bipedial and the first part of the "Missing Link". Scientists David Green and Zeresenay Alesmeged were granted permission to extensively study the remains of the fossil when they discovered the "Scapulae display several traits characteristic of suspensory apes, as do the few known fragmentary adult australopith representatives. Many of these traits change significantly throughout modern human ontogeny, but remain stable in apes. Thus, the similarity of juvenile and adult fossil morphologies implies that A. afarensis development was apelike." and not bipedial. (Green, Zeresenay) Furthermore the locomotive behavior shift supports the evidence that the fossil's life was spent doing considerable amount of climbing and not walking upright on two feet.
