Sarah aged 22 is a single mum with twins aged 2 ½. One of the twins named Billy is the quietest of the two and often plays alone, he enjoys playing with dinosaurs and lightens up when uncle Sam pays a visit. The other twin named Bob is full of energy and loves to go outdoors, he is very sociable and likes to play with other children.
Sarah works part time as a shop assistant and often leaves the twins with a nanny at home in the week. Sarah sets boundaries for the twins and the nanny keeps those boundaries when looking after the twins, for example, having a certain time for sleep. The twins father has no contact with them although the fathers brother, Sam (twins uncle) sometimes pays them a visit and offers to babysit for Sarah or take them on days out to the zoo or beach.
Sarah's mother had Sarah at 18 years of age and was soon put into care afterwards, Sarah then grew up with her foster parents who treated Sarah well during her childhood. Sarah then found and has produced contact with her biological mother over the past 2 years who sometimes has the twins for the weekend.
She has a good relationship with the nursery and always listens to advice of the nursery on the twin’s development. She has developed a good relationship with the twins key worker, Kathy and sometimes asks for advice on how she may help at home towards the twins development. In discussions about the twins learning she always involves them and listens to their opinions before making decisions.
Kathy has started to notice that Billy becomes aggressive and tries to bite other children when other children try to share toys with him and Kathy has also noticed his language is delayed.
Bob has started taking an interest in picture books and when seen a picture of a father in the book he points and says
" Sam"

Sarah has parental responsibility as she is the birth mother of the twins and provides for the twins.
The father also has parental responsibility if his name is on the birth certificate even if he doesn't have contact with the children.
In Sarah's case, her foster parents would have parental responsibility over Sarah as she they are her legal guardians. This would be shown in Sarah's foster papers with a legal document stating that her foster parents have agreed to parental responsibility over her.

The father is uninvolved as he has no contact with the twins and makes no attempt to do so.
The mother has authoritative parenting style as she engages herself with the setting and wants to know about her children's progression. She also listens and takes interest in her children's achievements. Sarah's foster parents would also be authoritative as they engaged with her as a child. Sarah's biological mother would be an uninvolved parenting style until recently as she wasn't involved in Sarah's life as a child until recently and wasn't interested in getting Sarah back.

Sarah has experienced love from her foster parents throughout her childhood and does not remember being put into care as she was too young. This could have an impact on Sarah's parenting as she may follow her foster parents parenting from when she grew up or Sarah may develop her own parenting style by being more intimidating towards the twins. If for example, Sarah's foster parent were strict and had certain rules for Sarah as she was growing up, Sarah may of also show that strictness towards the twins or she may have been less strict due to her experiencing restraint and limited in her life and experience.

As Sarah is a young mother and she listens to advice, the setting could advise that Sarah may involve a family support worker in order to make home more of a family controlled environment as Sarah isn't at home with the twins that often.
As the twins are at the age where they will start forming attachments with others it's crucial for mother to be at home and engaging with the twins any way she can. But as the twins are surrounded by nanny's and grandparents they are going to form a more secure attachment with them instead of Sarah.
The setting could support this by working around Sarah's work schedule and offering stay and play sessions a few times each week so she can interact with the twins in their natural play.
Billy has started showing aggression but seems happy when uncle Sam visits.
Billy's key worker Kathy could support Billy by forming a relationship with him, this could be done by dinosaurs as this is one f Billy's interests. Kathy could also involve Uncle Sam by asking Billy "did you go to the zoo? was there any dinosaurs?" this can develop Billy's imagination and encourage communication about his time at the zoo.
To support Billy's social development the setting could create an activity involving dinosaurs and engage a small group of children.

Working with parents and professionals:

Working with certain professionals and Sarah can be beneficial to the twins development and their home situation. For example, the setting could work with a family support worker to gain knowledge of the situation at the twins home and how this can effect their development. The family support worker would asses the family situation and offer support and guidance on how to keep things together and they would also provide opportunities for the children to build a stronger relationship with Sarah.
The family support worker would try to find out the possible reason why Billy is so unsociable at home and you as a practitioner would work with the professional in supporting this at the setting. You would provide activities with his interests to try and encourage Billy's social development. The family support worker may try to bring dad back into the picture and have contact with the twins but as the twins have never seen their biological father before they are slowly recognizing uncle Sam as their father as Bob has shown at the setting. This could cause distress and confusion for the twins which will further lead to delay in their emotional development. This could also cause the twins to isolate themselves it would be your role to support the twins in this situation and provide opportunities of distraction. This can be done by using the twins interests and offering support although it could cause the twins to have psychological and emotional damage. A family support worker and a practitioner would then work with a child psychiatrist to help and support the twins in taking on this emotional trauma.
