History of the Sonora Caverns

The Caverns was discovered in the 1900 on Stanley Mayfield's ranch. The cave was explored in 1955 and opened to the public in 1960. It costs $20 to tour and it is open from 9am to 5pm.

Tours

There are two special tours you can do in the Cavern. The first is the discovery challenge tour. The second is the photography tour. You are not allowed to go on a tour without a guide.

Information about the Cave

The caves average temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Some formations you can find in the cavern can be soda straws, and helictites. The most famous formation is a symmetrical fishtail helictites these form the shape of a butterfly. There is no huge room but the biggest room is 7 and half feet.

The Caverns of Sonora were discovered by a dog chasing a racoon into a 20 inch hole in the ground.

Animals

Some animals that people have found are salamanders, different kids of bugs, spiders, and many different fish. There are also different type of bats inside of the cavern.

Scientific Studies

The Texas Speleological Survey was a survey established in the 1960s to help learn and maintain caves. This organization is non-profit and has studied the Caverns of Sonora for many years.
