The history of the American Red Cross started when Clara Barton volunteered to be a nurse in the battle filed then others started to do the same. Barton first heard of the Swiss inspired Red Cross while travelling in Europe during the Civil War. The American Red Cross was founded on May 21, 1861 in Washington D.C. by Clara Barton and other volunteered nurses. Clara Barton led the American Red Cross for 23 years where we could expand our oversea disaster relief.

Most soldiers in the Confederacy were given a tent and a pair of boots and maybe a weapon so living wasn't good. Most soldiers died of disease, starved ti death, or were put into prisoner camps of the opposing side. Most soldiers had to get limbs amputated without correct medical care so they would bleed to death or die of infection. Especially in the South food was scarce since the North put a blockade on the South's supplies. Only about 20% of the South's supplies would make it through the blockade. Confederacy soldiers would often take supplies off of the Union soldiers dead bodies because they did not have boots, guns, or any other necessary supplies.

White free men between the ages 20-45 were being drafted into the war and most of them were poor meaning they couldn't pay for the war. One riot sparked in New York City because poor Irish immigrants were getting drafted into the war and were very angry due to the fact that African Americans weren't getting drafted and could still work on the factories. The riot lasted for 4 days and the men tore down the city and destroyed richer people's houses.
