Communicating responsibly on the internet is extremely important and simple things like not double checking your work can make a message you're trying to convey come out wrong. I think it is easy to mistake someone's message on a computer as being sarcastic because everything is nonverbal. Therefore, students must be taught how to use the internet in a reasonable and understanding manner. Think before you write and understand that the person you are communicating with on the internet can't see your facial expressions, so make sure you take that into consideration.

The actions that students take while using the internet at school or in the library should be monitored and are subject under CIPA. The significance of observing student's actions while navigating the web stops or can come to a conclusion of harmful content that kids may be observing. Digital law pertaining to hacking, illegally downloading music, identity theft and more, must be made aware to students of all ages. They must know that consequences will come as a punishment for any of these illegal actions. Students must be taught that rules must be followed and that actions like hacking are wrong. It starts with the teacher being fully educated on the topic so that the teacher can educate his/her class on the rules of proper etiquette of the internet.

But, if you do decide to act inappropriately like for example, downloading illegal music, you should know that there are consequences that you will have to face. It is especially important for teachers in today's society to be informed about this because technology use is rising in the classrooms. A teacher should not assume that his/her students know all the laws regarding Internet use. This is why it is important for each and every teacher to give a lesson before letting their students discover all that the Internet has to offer.

I think it's important to remember that there are repercussions for people who use the Internet irresponsibly. It is also extremely important to remember how easy it is for information to be misinterpreted over the web. Therefore, this project really helped me focus on the importance of carefully wording anything you want to communicate over the Internet because people cannot physically see the way you want to convey what you want to say and can't see your reaction either. Our research definitely emphasized my point of view on how important it is to double check before you send anything. If it sounds even a little aggressive over the Internet, don't send it. In terms of being a teacher, this research just made a clear point on how lessons on proper Netiquette should be required in every class that utilizes technology in any way. It is difficult for a young student to understand all that could go wrong while using the Internet. So, after researching all about digital citizenship and CIPA, I truly believe that informing students about all this can really benefit them. It will help them more than it will hurt them!

For instance, I understood that you should double check your work before sending and that you shouldn't hack a computer, but I wasn't aware that that was called netiquette or digital law. I think coming to recognition with the definition of the terms and what they meant helped me to fully understand and piece together what material fell under what term. I also think that finding examples of each definition gave me a more complete view of the topics and I feel more comfortable teaching them to my students in the future. Students need to be taught proper internet usage and the laws to abide by on the internet so that they don't get themselves into trouble. Beginning this project I made myself aware of the definitions of the terms and what CIPA was so that I could then proceed to research the extra information that needed to be found. I also think the videos were a huge help to understand proper netiquette and digital law. These videos are kid friendly and can be used in any elementary class or even secondary class. The videos slowly and clearly make the topics understandable and show visuals that are very beneficial. I really liked using padlet and I think this site alone will help me progress as a teacher. I can use this site for lessons and class discussions or even class projects. This is another way of using the internet in a positive way that can benefit not only teachers, but students as well.
