 **Chernobyl - This accident occured in 1986. It was the result of a flawed reactor design that had been operated by inadequate personnel training. The explosion and fire resulted in at least 5% of radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere. There were 28 people who died from the poisioning. Some 200 tonnes of highly radioactive material remains deep within it, and this poses an environmental hazard until it is better contained. There is a new Safe Confinement structure that should be built by 2016 so it will not be such a nuclear hazard.

**Fukushima - It was followed by an earthquake and happened on March 11, 2011. It was rated a 7 on the INES scale. There is over 100,000 people that were evacuated from their homes to ensure their safety. There has been over 17,000 government-financed temporary housing units for some 29,500 evacuees from the accident. The staff was having to manage contaminated water and keep the people away from the area. There is still reports going on from this accident.
