Global Issue: Beliefs, value, and education

Real life example:In modern society, people values vary. Some portion of people put more values on objects which is called Materialism who values physical comforts or the acquisition of wealth and material possessions, rather than with spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values. While some people values minds and connections between people and wildlife.

Justification:
The advertisement of the car can be viewed as materialism because the advertisement shows the effort that was put in during these workouts can be also related to the amount of effort that was put in designing and producing this car which makes the car more valuable as an object. Also the advertisement showed the designer personally crafting and the shaping the car which allow the audience to envy the car.

In Breath, Loonie and Piklet was awestruck of the board of the Sando. They described it as spanking and shinny-smooth rails. This shows that they defiantly did put values on the board of Sando. But it was not only on the board but also on the Sando personality, they instantaneously wish to resemble the idolized Sando. This leads the reader to appreciate their relationships more as they are relatable and one can see how much Pikelet and Loonie look up to Sando and the representation of immaterialism.

Global issue- beliefs, Values and education

Real life example:
Education is very important to every individual. it helps globally as well as within the country. Education provides skills in professional works and compete in the work place. Education is essential in order to be wealthy and run a good life especially in developing countries but also in developed countries. Education and the amount of wealth is connected to each other.

Example in the US

If you have a good and high education the amount of salary increases. So it is important that you have studied higher education in oder to get a good job and high salary to run a family lifetime.

explanation:

The extract from the "Breath" tells us that Sando is wealthy high means that he had a good education and some people but not all being wealthy have attitude. As he was wealthy he had lots of new boards and received lots of boards form different parts of the world to surf. Sando also makes his own boards from which we can clearly tell he can do this because of education.

The porche ad includes engineers like in building a design for the car which obviously involves education.

The wealthiness of Sando and the job of the engineer in the ad is very relevant to the example that education is essential in order to have a good job and be wealthy through out the life.

That helps each individual to know what’s happening in the world and around and helps us change things better. Education helps us to learn more things and makes us to think in different perspective. Education encourages us to think positively and gain good thoughts. Education is important to develop economy. In India, education is important and it has always focused on improving the reading and writing skills.

Justification:

Ad: In this add, it mostly tells about the speed of the car, designing the car, etc which is made by an engineer, which tells us that education is involved and is important.

Breath:

In this extract “Breath” we know that Sando owns lots of surfboards from different countries which tells that the education is important.

In both ad and the extract we come to know that education is important from the justification above which helps them to stay wealthy and and lead a good life.

Global Issue: Culture, Identity and Community

Real Life Example: Athletes feels some sort of pressure to conform to society and to conform to pressures of the people around you for example friends, family, peers, teachers etc.

Breath: The community that Pikelet is surrounded by puts this pressure on him to perform as a surfer. Also, As Pikelet describes throughout the extract the lifestyle that the people around him, Loonie, Sando and Eva, live which he learns about and tries to fit in with. For example, being around Sando is something that Pikelet would never do on his own however, Loonie pushes him to do.

Advertisement: Since this is an advertisement there is a lot of convincing language used to pressure the audience into being active and working on their own fitness. They use the persuasive technique of making the audience feel guilty. Which pressures the audience into conforming to this lifestyle.

Global Issue: Politics, Power, and Justice

Real-Life Example: Extensive viewing of television violence can cause child anxiety and greater aggressiveness. According to Kids Health, the average American child will witness 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18. Therefore, it seems possible to conclude that television violence (including illegalness) could negatively affect children.

Justification:
Breath
Drugs

-Page 60 “we began to cut weeds”

-Loonie and Pikelet cut weeds for Sando. Children should be kept away from doing these jobs as weed is a type of drug. Ethically and legally not right. Maybe an example of power as Loonie and Pikelet is idolizing Sando. Could be a chance for Loonie and Pikelet to learn drugs from Sando as an act of deviation (as both of their family is strict)?

Adult and child sex relationship of Eva and Pikelet

-Page 192-193 “…but each time I let go Eva’s throat and ripped the slimy bag off her face I didn’t see rapture. What I saw was death ringing her like a bell”

-Eva’s preference for sexual asphyxia is making Pikelet feel afraid and scared. Not only does Eva and Pikelet have an adult and child sex relationship, but they are also cheating on Sando. Eva has sexual dominance over Pikelet, therefore Pikelet does what Eva asks without even liking it. In the end, both Pikelet and Eva experience great tribulations. Pikelet has mental health problems, and Eva is found dead.

"Shaped by Performance"
Racing in urban settings

-Represents wildness and bravery. However, is illegal to race in urban settings (speed racing). The wildness of the car is also represented through the image of the wolf and fire.

To think about

-Both “Breath” (especially from page 57 to 61) and “Shaped by Performance” put emphasis on the appearance – is it right to value the appearance and the physical strength of something or someone?

-Is it okay for Loonie and Pikelet to surf at night without parent’s permission?

Global Issue : Art, Creativity, and Imagination
Real Life example:

Globally, people try to keep up with the standard of beauty defined by themselves or others. Such beauty standards lead people to admire people who have those features. This leads people to complain about their features, and, in the extreme, fixing their feature artificially or naturally.

South Korea is one of the countries that has a homogenous beauty standard. There is societal pressure for people to follow. This leads to plastic surgeries and beauty programs to be developed so that people can fit into these standards.

Justification:
The extract of ‘Breath’ includes a paragraphs of Pikelet’s admiring Sando. He admires the knowledge and experiences that Sando has had before. He admires the surfboards that Sando owns. When waxing the board he feels like he is soiling it. In the perspective of Pikelet, Sand was a perfect man. This leads him not just to admire him but being almost obsessed with him, wanting to be recognized all the time.

Porsche advertisement shows an image of athletes, a fit individuals. The bodies these athletes have are well admired by others. By connecting this image to their product, they are allowing the people who admires that healthy, fit, and hard-working image to buy their product. They buy it to imitate the images, believing that they will be similar to the people who acts inside of the advertisement.

The behavior of Pikelet and consumer in this two different texts are very similar to people who admires beauty standard- they imitate, follow, and like those standards they have.

Global Issue: Art, Creativity and Imagination

RLS: The standard of beauty is nothing less than to feel good about yourself and also to please others, because many times in the society we live in we end up being judged by our appearance, by our physical body, by our hair, clothes and etc.

Beauty makes people admire you, praise you, which makes your self-esteem go up, However when you don't follow the “standard of beauty” exposed by society you end up being judged which makes your self-esteem go down. That's why people always end up never being happy with their bodies, and always wanting something more, like plastic surgery and so on. The way our society thinks, can be a great incentive for everyone to achieve their goals and successful and feel good about themselves.

In the Porsche advertisement it shows a lot of persistence from athletes, engineers and even the drivers, the video also shows the physical strength of the athletes working hard to achieve their goals. The body of each athlete shown in the video is precisely to cause admiration in the people who are watching and also to motivate them more and more to pursue their goals, being healthy, hard working and alsobeing brave and aggressive in a good way.

On the study pages of the book “Breath”, it’s seen the two boys constantly looking and admiring Sando and with the desire to be able to learn from him. They were obsessed for Sando surfing he was the perfect man for the boys, almost an idol for them, even being old.

Global Issue:

Culture, Identity, and Community

Real-life Example:

In this age of digital devices, there has never been a point where any one person can receive so much information and communicate with so many people, however despite living in the most connected time of human history, people are feeling lonelier than ever. Right now, there exists what many call a “Loneliness Epidemic.” This epidemic is very prominent among those of older age and has been proven to increase the rate of mortality similar to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Many people judge that the majority of their relationships aren’t meaningful and even lack connection, therefore, feeling socially isolated. As people grow older, many social circles become much smaller leading to a compounding effect of loneliness.

Justification:

In Breath, this can be seen from the actions of both Pikelet and Loonie. In the extract, we are informed about the obsession that Pikelet and Loonie both have with Sando, as they see him as an idol and a mentor. Pikelet appreciates the connection he shares with Sando yet seems to yearn for more to the point of doing labor occasionally for free just to be around Sando and in an attempt to understand Sando.

In the Porsche Ad Garbarz and Partner almost appeal to those who are lonely. By creating a narrative behind the car and associating it with a group of people, Garbarz and Partner create this link to a community and culture which would further attract those who are lonely, however, because this connection is only a marketing scheme it would lead to feeling even more lonely.

These two texts show the different approaches of those who might be wanting those social connections.

Plus the adds wants to associate their physical condition with the owning the car, thus making the car itself a very good (and expensive) way to be distinguished and superior.
the difficulty of achieving in having the actors body is associated with the energy put into gaining the money to buy the car, making the connections between the two conditions even stronger.

Global Issue: Politics, Power and Justice

Real-life Example: The ideal masculine qualities imposed onto men by society can often lead to toxic masculinity. The appraisal for strength, leadership and confidence can often be unhealthily obsessed over especially by young boys. These "masculine" qualities can lead to power dynamics that replicates political structures as seen through the extract from Breath and the Porsche ad.

Justification:
Pikelet and Loonie idolise Sando not only for his surfing but for his masculine physicality. Pikelet goes into great detail while describing Sando’s scars, his “sun-bleached” hair etc. as if he is somehow god-like. Pikelet idolises Sando’s physical fitness because it represents strength and masculinity, qualities that he appreciates and looks up to, which allows Sando's authority over him.

The Porsche ad reiterates these values by putting emphasis onto the physicality of the athletes, their muscles and bodies. Furthermore, the car’s shape and design is also a point of interest that is used to sell the product. Porsche is using aesthetic values to advertise the car and engage the audience who might also share these values. Both texts also praise masculine qualities of strength, unruliness, and leadership.

Global Issue:: Art, Creativity and imagination

Definition of beauty: Its a combination of quality and shape, colour, sense and sight.

In the Porsche I we can that see that the ad mentions a bit the beauty of the car and shape. We also see that quality of the car with all its curves and edge and smoothness to it all. We saw some of the thinking behind in the making the car by the engineer who was working on some kind of formula for the design of the car. We did't just see the car we also saw the both men and women who were show by doing work out. We could see their body were in good condition and none of them unfit. They kept pushing themselves to the next limit. We could also a drive who was seen briefly driving the Porsche car around a race track.

In the book we see that how both Pikelet and Loonie love for surfing and art of surfing there is something gracious about it to them. We can meet another character in the book Sando. Sando is a surfer too jus the like the Pikelet and Loonie. The boys admire Sando for both his physical form with bleached hair and scar on his from surfing but also for the way he surfs. To both Loonie and Pikelet must of have looked like a god to them both.
