Life in Marvellous Melbourne

Life in Marvellous Melbourne was pretty quiet until Victoria’s population started to drift into Melbourne to make it a bigger city. By 1881, Melbourne’s population had risen to 268,000. However, Melbourne drew more people from country Victoria and overseas and by 1891, Melbourne’s numbers nearly pushed to 500,000. Life on the Gold Rush streets was no easy matter, whenever it rained it turned the roads into knee-deep mud, main streets would become raging rivers. Most pedestrians and animals would drown but in summer, hot winds whipped up dust storms. People tied veils around their heads to protect their eyes and nostrils. Water carts dampened the streets to keep down the dust so it didn't flick up to hurt people. There were many improvements to Marvellous Melbourne to improve the lifestyle of many people, such as gas and street lighting they were both introduced in 1857. Many hoped the lighting would make the city safe after dark and prevent the congregation of 'bad characters’ that would be around after dark. Even when there was good weather there was always dangers. Deep potholes claimed many victims and there was a constant risk of being knocked out by galloping horses. Immigrants that would come from Britain chased a single dream and that dream was gold. Thousands of immigrants would arrive daily, Lodging houses and hotels were packed there was no room for more people whatsoever. House’s made of iron, timber and canvas sprang up on the city's edge

Not everything in Marvellous Melbourne was wonderful, there was a gang called Larrikin. They were a group of young men that were often badly behaved and roamed the streets at night time causing mischief. In the 1880's the city was overcrowded, some suburbs like Collingwood and Richmond experienced diseases outbreaks, some of those diseases were typhoid, tuberculosis and diphtheria. The death rate amongst babies and young children was at an all time high because of the diseases. Marvellous Melbourne had a higher death rate than London for most of the 1880's. Both household and human waste were dumped in the Yarra River. Cesspits which were pits into which householders with no toilets could empty their waste, were overflowing and it was causing the city's disposal of human excrement to stink the city out. The city stunk that bad it caused a Sydney writer to name the city "Marvellous Smellbourne". Later in 1897 the city finally had an operating sewer system.

The richness of the city was also displayed in the clothing worn by many pedestrians and the entertainment shown on the streets. Other areas of the city were catered for specific businesses, legal practices like lawyers were located in the main streets of Bourke Street, while doctors went to the end of Collins Street. Melbourne also built a cable tram network that would give it that little bit extra transport because the city was growing really quickly, they also built an extensive railway system to the growing suburbs. In addition to work and life there were major events like the Melbourne Cup at which "Melburnians" could show off their status and style, to others attending the races.

Marvellous Melbourne was quite a small area to start of with. But it has definitely grown over the years, and it has shown to be one of the biggest cities in the world. Melbourne started off being called "Smellbourne" because of the sewerage leaks and the dead bodies being tossed into the Yarra River, but since then Melbourne has installed a new efficient sewer system. By Melbourne hosting the Melbourne Cup definitely had an input into it growing so did the first season of the Victorian Football League in 1897. An other contribution to it being the city it is to this date is the Olympics being hosted in Melbourne in 1956 that drew several people to the area. We all know Melbourne is a massive city and is one of the biggest cities in the world to this date, but it did take some time for that to happen
