This semester I felt like I really improved on my face drawings. In the beginning of the semester, I did an oil pastel piece in which I incorporated a face-- now that I look back at it, I realize my proportions of the eyes/mouth were wrong. Not to say that it was bad because I am still proud of that piece, but I have just realized that I have improved a lot when it comes to drawing faces. For my final project, I did a portrait of my mom/brother, and the proportions are much more accurate than my first piece of the semester. I learned a lot about how to use certain materials, and how to use composition to make a piece more interesting. I also learned how to fix something/make something new out of your mistakes. For example, when my lost/found piece was not turning out the way I wanted it to, I decided to use paint as well, which added the density/contrast that I was looking for. I am not considering pursuing art as a future career, but I definitely want to continue to create new pieces. In the future, I think it would be fun as well as a challenge to try abstract art, since I normally do more realistic pieces. I also think I would enjoy getting to work with paint more, and do more landscape pieces. I had never been limited to only 3 colors on a piece of art, so I felt challenged in the sense that I had to use trial and error to achieve the colors I wanted to color with. I'm very happy with how this piece turned out, especially since I struggled at first when trying to blend colors. For my project, I chose the theme "paradox". A paradox is "statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality, expresses a possible truth", which essentially means that it is something that seems to go against to common sense, but may still be true. Some examples of a paradox could be sayings like "jumbo shrimp" or "the beginning of the end". In my piece, I tried to convey the idea that two worlds-- seeming to be unrealistic and going against common sense-- can exist at the same time and be connected through something that symbolizes the truth. In my work, the ladder that connects the opposite worlds symbolizes the truth. As I was brainstorming ideas, I felt that the separation of the two scenes went along with the theme, but there was a missing element that would enable me to express its full meaning. I decided that in order to convey the "paradox" idea, there had to be a "real" object or something that pieced the two together. Also, in case the audience's eye was not drawn as much to the ladder, I tried to incorporate the light source of the piece more, in that I painted the rays from the sun seeping through the water and bleeding onto the forest scene. This was another factor that connected the two worlds. Overall, the main symbol that brings the piece to a full circle is the ladder-- it symbolizes truth because, without it, the piece is separated. But with it, it enables the audience to see that this fantasy place is, in reality, the truth.
