Challenge: For the Ladies!
You may know her from the movie Hidden Figures- Katherine Johnson was worked as a mathematician at NASA for 35 years! Katherine was one of the first African American female scientists at NASA and she's remembered as a trailblazer for this, but also for her work; Johnson calculated trajectories for major space missions, including flights to mars and the moon. Her decades of effort earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in 2015. Katherine died last month at the age 101! Let's give it up for women in science!

I don't have a picture, but I play Catan all the time, including this break. I lose every game, but its a great way to explore how early societies may have thought about resources and expanding their territory. They would have had to gain as many resources through conquering as possible, and when out of a valuable resource find a way to trade with their neighbors. It is also important to have good communication and travel through the expansion of roads to various resources and ports in order to trade. The game is especially fun with friends, and my personal opinion is that sheep are the superior resource.

I watched Schindler's List, a historical film depicting the holocaust and the life of Oskar Schindler, a business man who saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish people who otherwise would have been imprisoned or killed at Auschwitz. The movie held a powerful message about humanity and cruelty, and the duality of hope and despair. Oskar Schindler is a good man, but brutally human, driven by wealth and greed, whose actions are not entirely angelic. While saving Jewish people he used them as in his factories. The movie is gruesomely real with the depiction of the holocaust, and the overwhelming violence and brutality emphasizes the cruelty of the Nazi party during this era.

Starting in the late 1950s, Carole King wrote Will You Love Me Tomorrow. She also wrote for The Shirelles, and a song she wrote became the first ever number 1 song for an African American girl group. She then broke off to have a solo career, and quickly became very popular. In 2013, she became the first ever female to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. A quote from her is "I just sort of try to be a good person; try to write music that lifts people and makes me feel good to sing". Music has been such an influential part of my life, and I love getting the opportunity to share it with as many people as possible. It took people like Carole King to allow females to become more noticed and appreciated for their song writing abilities. Thank you Carole King <3

Challenge: For the Ladies!
Anne Frank was a German Jew who was a child during the Holocaust, and was one of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis. She is famously known for her diary, which she wrote over a period of two years while in hiding with the rest of her family. After Anne, her sister, and her mother were killed and Europe was liberated, her father published her diary, and since then, it has been translated into 70 languages. Anne's diary shares her past experiences, hopes, and fears with the rest of the world. It shows how much pain and suffering the Holocaust caused innocent people. Anne's work has helped keep the memory of the Jews of the Holocaust alive. She, along with the rest of victims, will never be forgotten.

I did use the geography and languages of the places I was in to narrow things down. At one point I spawned inside a shop! Not on the road! I could not go anywhere so I was stuck inside the shop.

I played Geo Guesser, and it was actually really fun. I looked for street names or businesses that I could then search up to narrow down where I was. The hardest one was when it gave me very limited movement, and I ended up getting that one very wrong (no surprise). Though I correctly guessed 3 places of the 5, which i'm very proud of. The closest one was only 35 yards away; I was essentially only on the other side of the road. For a different location, I looked up the Russian alphabet to then copy and paste certain letters into google translate. This game had me practice using my resources, and using my head. I'm really proud of my score, and I had a lot of fun. :)

She wrote an essay collection, Bad Feminist, that soon made her a New York Times best-selling author. The collection of essays covers five topics and how being a feminist has affected Gay's life for better and worse. I also took the time to watch her Ted Talk and she is so empowering. I love that she is realistic and shows that she doesn't live up to being a perfect feminist and asks that we embrace all types or "flavors" of feminism. She strongly believes women are equal (possibly superior) to men and this needs to be recognized by the world.

I watched the movie, Richard Jewell. This movie is about the false accusations against Richard Jewell for the 1996 Centennial Park bombing. This movie shows how Jewell was depicted by the media and just by him doing his job and wanting help law enforcement, he was accused of a bombing. Comparing the movie to the actual story, it seems they made a huge effort in trying not to glamorize the real story and make it as raw as they could. One was a wood structure near the ocean with many tall skinny trees and I knew it was somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. One speed limit sign was 60 on a backroad so I knew it had to be km so I guessed a place in the Nordic region based on that and the climate. In one city there was a sign talking about how many Americans die per year of some disease. Overall there were enough hints to make pretty close guesses.

For the movie challenge, I watched Saving Private Ryan. I had seen this movie before but decided to watch it again for this challenge. It takes place during WWII and is about a group of American soldiers going out to rescue a paratrooper named James Ryan, the last surviving soldier out of three that were killed in action. The movie is almost 3 hours long so I got kind of bored of it since I had seen it before, but it’s still a good movie nonetheless.

My sister helped out, so it kind of turned into a game, but we accomplished putting something on the table, so I'm calling it a success. We made some tamale pie-like recipe that we found on this website for 1920s dinner parties. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures because my parents ate it before I remembered to take any. However, I do have a word of advice. If you ever try to make a tamale pie recipe, beware of the amount of spices they tell you to put in there. Especially the chili powder. They tell you to put a lot of chili powder.

Challenge: Game It
I played this game called Catan. I had never played it before. The goal was to get 10 victory points. In order to get victory points, you must build settlements and cities, which you buy using things like: wool, wood, ore, brick, and wheat. It is similar to Monopoly; however, rather than money making you rich, it is the items you trade. This is very similar to what we have learned in AP World because as you expand your territory more, you can make more trades, which makes an overall good economy. I recommend this game for anyone who likes Monopoly. However, there are many factors to the game that will be confusing at first. I was about to win, after a long two hours, when my whole family teamed up against me.

It was made for Sultan Ahmet Camii and designed by a master architect, Mimar Sinan in 16th century Istanbul. Yet, I came across something that, I kid you not, physically made me tense up when I saw it, so I thought I would share it with you all here. It's called "Object", made by Meret Oppenhiem. It was made in Paris in 1936, and it was inspired by a conversation between Oppenhiem and Pablo Picasso, where one of them made the remark "Just about anything could be covered in fur" after admiring a fur covered bracelet. It is actually a well know surrealism object.

I listened to a podcast from a series called "Lore". I watched episode 135: A Good Death. The idea was that people in 1863 had this idea of a "good death", where you would be surrounded by loved ones while on your death bed, and die peacefully. This idea was very common, and most people got it. How, during the Battle of Gettysburg, many people were suddenly aware that they might not get a good death. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers were dying, some even in the homes of the town of Gettysburg. Many people believe that some of the dead are unable to move on, and stay, haunted the town. There have been hundreds of stories of weird noises, objects moving, flickering lights, voices, blood found in weird places, and people in mirrors in these houses where the soldiers died. I learned the about the crazy number of people who died in the 3 day war, and how most of the bodies were just left in the sun, since the losing side didn't bury them. The entire podcast was so interesting to me, and I really really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend if you like creepy or ghost-story-like things.

The object of the game is to fill your tower with the brands you buy as you go around the board until your tower is worth $800. I was mostly able to guess in the same continent but I was no where near close to getting it accurate. One thing that helped was when the pictures had signs with companies or different languages on them so I could use that to figure out where I was. Also, I made sure to look at which side of the road the driver was on and this was helpful.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been an icon in the field of law for many years now. The Supreme Court is the most important aspect of law, and having such a strong female character in the courthouse provides inspiration to all aspiring female and even male attorneys.

This is a postcard sent from my great great great grandparents Emma and Sam Risien to their son, Charlie, just before they left England to embark on the Titanic. Unfortunately, they both died in 3rd class when the ship sunk but it is really cool to have this piece of history in our family to remember them by. It is a little hard to read because it was written on March 30th, 1912 but I'll include the contents of the letter here: "About the time you get this we will be leaving for New York. We expect to sail on the new ship "Titanic" largest in the world and her first trip (45,000 tons). Two more letters I think shall be all I can send. We shall sail from Southampton on April 10th, that is if they can get enough coal to go on. It is getting very scarce and dear. Both well, Papa."

Challenge: Podcast Palooza
I chose to listen to a few episodes of History of Rome by Mike Duncan. The origins of Rome are not entirely known, but the podcasts tell a story of Romulus, who's birth was an accident but he technically was royal. When he grew up he killed his brother and began to amass a large army of criminals to create a regional kingdom. His army was exclusively made of men, and knew there would not be a second generation to occupy Rome. Romulus tricked neighboring kingdoms into a banquet where his army grabbed as many women as they could. This outraged the families, and Rome proceeded to fight many battles with neighboring kingdoms. I've learned a lot about Italy in AP World, but it was interesting to learn about how one of the most popular cities rose. Usually in AP World I learn about the rise of states and leaders rather than cities and their people. It reminded me of earlier in AP World where nearly all rule came as a result of military conquering. Although the story of Romulus is likely false, it still paints a picture of how Rome became what it is now.

And in each room, there were little information things you could click on to get more information about the animal. I love aquatic life, I love the ocean, and I especially love dolphins! If I ever go to Maryland, I would love going to this aquarium.

It wasn't like the normal history movie that can sometimes be boring but it had a really good storyline and I felt that it was pretty historically accurate. I would recommend this to anyone even if you aren't a history buff.

For the get artsy challenge, I chose a painting called "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. It was painted in 1910 and is considered to be one of the most iconic paintings in the history of Western art. The painting depicts a screaming man on a bridge along with two other men standing off in the distance. Munch's intention with this painting was to express human emotions in the simplest way possible. A pastel version of this painting was sold for $120,000,000 at an auction in 2012.

Not only is it a movie about crime history, it has also made history as being one of the highest rated movies ever created. I thought that it was a really good movie, and I believe it showed the time period very accurately. I think that it's a must see.

I tried looking for signs and cars to help give me a hint, but many of them didn't have any. The only reason I got the last one was because I remembered learning that Niagara Falls was between New York and Canada.

Challenge: History Movie Critique
I watched the movie "Unbroken" the other night. I have read the book several times, but never seen the movie. While I enjoy the book more, the movie was still extremely engaging. It was pretty well done, even though there were definitely some aspects I strongly disliked. It is a very complicated story that covers so many years, that a short film cannot really cover it too well. It was still engaging though, and if you are looking for an interesting movie to watch I would recommend it.

The national aquarium has many rooms, but the one I spent the most time in was the Tropical Rainforest room.

I watched the 1981 WWI film Gallipoli. Overall, I enjoyed this film, and I feel as though it portrayed this particular war realistically, at least from an Australian point of view. For the most part, the characters were interesting enough and the acting was good as well. I liked the interaction between the characters especially, as the dialogue was very genuine and realistic. Visually this film is stunning as well, it truly brings you into this time period seamlessly with how it's shot and lit. Additionally, Gallipoli was paced nicely throughout. I would recommend this movie to people interested in war movies.
