The idea of flight is as old as mankind itself, but the concept of an airplane has only been around for two centuries. Leonardo da Vinci made the first real studies of flight in the 1480´s. He developed one of the first design concepts for a flying machine. But it wasn't until five centuries later that the first successful self-propelled aircraft was built. From there on, airplanes continued to improve and began to have more purposes.

An ornithopter is a machine designed to achieve flight by means of flapping wings. Leonardo da Vinci made one of the first designs, but he never actually built one. Even though we now know that such machine wouldn't have been able to fly, it was still a remarkable achievement considering the knowledge of the day.

During the early to mid 19th century, George Cayley worked to discover a way that man could fly. He was one of many to design many different versions of gliders that used the movements of the body to control.

Over 50 years he made improvements to the gliders. He changed the shape of the wings so that the air would flow over the wings correctly. He designed a tail for the gliders to help with the stability. He tried a biplane design to add strength to the glider. He also recognized that there would be a need for power if the flight was to be in the air for a long time.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first humans to make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft. The plane was powered by a 12-horsepower internal combustion engine, in which the brothers built themselves. It flew for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight. During the next few years, the Wright brothers further developed their airplanes but kept a low profile about their successes in order to secure patents and contracts for their flying machines. By 1905, their aircraft could perform complex maneuvers and remain aloft for up to 39 minutes at a time.

Ever since the creation of the first plane to successfully fly, many engineers continued to improve the machine. They served many purposes during WWI and WWII. Today, we have jet powered aircrafts capable of breaking the sound barrier. We even have cargo planes that can carry loads up to 640 tons or about 1,280,000 pounds and commercial planes that can carry up to 853 passengers.
