Lois Lowry's writing style is full of deep emotions and thought-provoking themes. She uses simple and clear language to make complex emotions accessible. She gives her characters a rich inner world and brings their inner thoughts to the forefront, allowing the reader to empathize with them. In her works, social and moral themes are frequently addressed; she draws attention to social issues and individual choices through dystopian narratives. She also uses symbolic expression to add richness to her descriptions. By shifting between time and place, she deepens her stories. For these reasons, Lowry creates impactful stories that provide readers with a thought-provoking and emotional experience. She uses a strange method to write her stories, she drinks 2 cups of coffee, one with sugar. Then she starts writing her stories in her bed with a pen his father got for her when she was 9.

Lois Lowry, born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a renowned American author known for her significant contributions to children's and young adult literature. Growing up primarily in Pennsylvania, she attended Brown University, where she studied liberal arts and graduated in 1959. Lowry published her first book, ‘A Summer to Die’, in 1977 and has since written approximately 50 books, with notable works including ‘The Giver’, which explores themes of conformity and individuality and won the Newbery Medal in 1994, and ‘Number the Stars’, a poignant historical novel about the Danish resistance during World War II that also received the Newbery Medal. Her writing is characterized by clear, accessible prose, often addressing complex emotional issues such as grief and identity, encouraging young readers to reflect on their own experiences. Throughout her career, Lowry has garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. Drawing from her personal experiences, including the loss of her sister, Lowry remains an influential voice in literature, currently residing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she continues to write and speak about her work.

Yüksel Aysalar

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian graphic novelist and filmmaker, best known for her graphic novel "Persepolis," which tells the story of her childhood in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. Born on November 22, 1969, in Rasht, Iran, she was sent to Vienna at age 14 for her safety. "Persepolis" features a unique black-and-white art style and has been adapted into an animated film that received an Academy Award nomination. A fun fact about Satrapi is that she has a passion for cooking and often incorporates her love of food into her storytelling. Her work explores themes of identity, gender, and political oppression, and she is an active advocate for human rights. Now living in France, she continues to inspire through her storytelling and activism.

Sometimes described as a graphic memoir, Persepolis melds the format of a graphic novel with a prose-only memoir Satrapi, who writes in French, continued to probe the boundaries between graphic novel and memoir with Broderies (2003; Embroideries). It consists of stories told by Satrapi’s mother, grandmother, and other female relatives and friends about their experiences as women living in Iran.

Marjane Satrapi is an acclaimed Iranian graphic novelist and filmmaker, famous for her graphic novel "Persepolis," which depicts her experiences growing up in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. She was born on November 22, 1969, in Rasht, Iran, and moved to Vienna at the age of 14 for her safety. "Persepolis" is characterized by its distinctive black-and-white illustrations and was adapted into an animated film that garnered an Academy Award nomination. One interesting fact about Satrapi is that she originally wanted to become a scientist before discovering her passion for art and storytelling. Her works often delve into themes of identity, gender, and political oppression, and she actively advocates for human rights. Now based in France, she continues to create impactful stories and promote important social issues.

Daniel Keyes was an American writer and professor best known for "Flowers for Algernon," a science fiction novel that’s sold more than five million copies since its publication in 1966. He won the Hugo and Nebula awards for his work and was chosen as an Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes explores several deep and thought-provoking themes. Here are some of the main ones: Intelligence vs. Happiness= It questions whether increased intelligence leads to greater happiness. As Charlie becomes smarter, he gains knowledge but also experiences loneliness, disillusionment, and emotional pain. Identity and the Self=Charlie's transformation raises questions about personal identity. Is he still the same person after the operation? The novel explores how intelligence changes the way Charlie views himself and the world. This book technically science fiction, the story is very grounded in the real-world ethical and emotional issues of its time. There was a strong focus on scientific progress as part of global competition, especially between the US and the Soviet Union. During this period, there was growing public interest (and concern) about psychological experiments and ethical boundaries in scientific research. The novel reflects these concerns, especially through the questionable ethics of the experiment on Charlie.

When Charlie says, “I am on the edge of it. I sense it. They all think I’m killing myself,” he means that he feels like something bad is about to happen to him, like he is about to lose everything he earned from the operation. He knows his intelligence is starting to fade, and it scares him. He feels alone and confused, like standing at the edge of a cliff. The people around him think he’s giving up or trying to hurt himself because he seems sad and distant. But really, he is just struggling with fear and sadness.
