This poem explores the struggle for meaning in an absurd world. It is easy to connect with and relate to, as Whitman is questioning his own life and what positive things he has accomplished. Whitman's poem helps demonstrate what many of us worry about, our life, our future, and our purpose throughout it all. Whitman's message is to encourage us all to rise above the challenges and hardships that we face and instead recognize the significance. He employs stressful imagery by describing things such as the "sordid crowds I see around me." This helps others who may be stressed or overwhelmed with thoughts of the future feel seen.
