Japanese aristocrats and entrepreneurs exploited the poor throughout the period of mass industrialization by fueling and taking advantage of their dire need for more income than that earned in farming. Document 4, which detailed how the peasants of Japan had most of their harvest of crops taken from them by their Daimyos, or landlords, and how rural families' greatest sources of income were the young girls they sent to work in factories, was written by a monk who witnessed this sentencing of adolescents to the factory work force often and served to offer historical context for Japan in the 1900's. This information is evidence to the fact that even though the girls weren't physically dragged away from their homes by the factory owners, they were coerced into working the machines through necessity brought upon them by those who benefited from the production of these businesses. By forcing the common folk into poverty and offering the factories as the only means of substantial income, Japanese aristocrats and business men ensured that they could have and abundance of factory workers who weren't in economic or political positions to demand large salaries.
